Lesson 2 Geography of Great Britain

This truly is a fabulous tunnel near the town Halnaker in England.

This tunnel is incredibly popular among photographers.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles. The British Isles consist of 2 large islands, Great Britain and Ireland, and about 5000 small islands.

The British Isles are separated from the European continent by the North Sea and the English Channel. The western coast of Great Britain is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea.

The United Kingdom has a temperate climate, with plentiful rainfall all year round. The temperature varies with the seasons, seldom dropping below −11 °C or rising above 35 °C.

Geographically, the island is marked by low, rolling countryside in the east and south, while hills and mountains predominate in the western and northern regions.

The north and west of England are mountainous, but mountains are not very high.

BEN NAVIS in Scotland is the highest mountain (1344 m)‏.

There are a lot of rivers in the UK, but they are not very long.

The SEVERN is the longest river.

The THAMES is the deepest and the most important one.

The UK consists of 4 countries:

- England – Wales – Scotland – Northern Ireland

ENGLAND

The capital of England is London.

The population is more than 53 million people.

The country includes over 100 smaller islands.

Big Ben is in the clock tower known as "Elizabeth Tower".

SCOTLAND

Edinburgh, the country's capital and second largest city, is one of Europe's largest financial centers.

Glasgow, Scotland's largest city.

Aberdeen is the third largest city in Scotland and the title of Europe's oil capital.

WALES

The capital is Cardiff.

The population is more then 3 million people.

Rugby union is seen as a symbol of Welsh identity and an expression of national consciousness.

Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales.

The Millennium Stadium is the national stadium of Wales, located in Cardiff.

It is the home of the Wales national rugby union team.

NORTHERN IRELAND

The capital is Belfast.

The population is more then 1,8 million people.

One of two main universities in Northern Ireland is The Queen's University of Belfast.
