far – дальний, далекий; farther – более дальний, более далекий;

further – более дальний, дальнейший, добавочный

farthest, furthest – самый дальний, самый далекий

I met him in the farthest corner of the park.

Я встретил его в самом дальнем углу парка.

We have obtained further information on this matter.

Мы получили дальнейшие сведения по этому делу.

10. Прилагательные “ elder/eldest” употребляются перед существительными, когда речь идет о членах семьи: my elder brother/son, the eldest child, she is the eldest. А прилагательные “older/oldest” говорят о возрасте людей и предметов: He is older than me (I am). Он старше меня.

This book is older. Эта книга старее.

11. Прилагательное “ the latest” обозначает «недавний, новый, современный»:

I bought the latest edition of today’s paper.

Я купила свежий экземпляр сегодняшней газеты.

А прилагательное “ the last” обозначает «последний»:

I bought the last edition of today’s paper.

Я купила последний экземпляр сегодняшней газеты.

12. После превосходной степени часто употребляется предлог “ of” (со

значением «из»):

Steve is the best of all the students in our group.

Стив – лучший из всех студентов в нашей группе.

13. Для выражения меньшей или самой низкой степени качества предмета по сравнению с другими предметами употребляются соответственно слова “ less” (менее) и “ least” (наименее), которые ставятся перед прилагательным в форме положительной степени:

pleasant - приятный, less pleasant - менее приятный,

least pleasant - наименее приятный;

сomfortable - удобный, less comfortable - менее удобный,

least с omfortable - наименее удобный.

Exercise 4. Give the comparative and superlative of the following adjectives.

Clean, hard, cheap, expensive, easy, brave, serious, clever, perfect, good, hot, far, important, bad, heavy, practical, wet, unique, small, thin, fine-looking, kind-hearted, old-fashioned, well-read, healthy, interesting, fast, stupid, talented, shy, dear, convenient.

Exercise 5. Choose the right variant.

1) happy

a) happy – happyer - the happyest

b) happy – happier - the happiest

 

2) wicked

a) wicked – wickeder - the wickedest

b) wicked - more wicked - the most wicked

3) fat

a) fat – fatter – the fattest

Exercise 6. Open the brackets and use the comparative form of the adjectives.

1. This exercise is (simple) than that one. 2. New districts of Ufa are (beautiful) than

the old ones. 3. He is (clever) than his brother. 4. My (old) sister is 4 years (old) than me. 5. Are expensive things (good) than cheap ones? 6. Is English grammar (difficult) than Russian grammar? 7. She had to give us (far) information though she didn’t want to. 8. Students from Group 1 are (industrious) than those from Group 3. 9. Have you met our new colleagues, Mr. Brown and Mr. Green? The former is an excellent economist, (late) is a good lawyer. 10. They have got down to business without any (far) delay. 11. Is there a (last) train passing here? 12. (Far) details will be given tomorrow.

 

Exercise 7. Give the superlative form of the adjectives in brackets.

1. The Pan-American Highway is (long) road in the world. 2. The Beatles were (successful) pop group. 3. Japan has (crowded) railways in the world. 4. This is our (old) national airline. 5. It was (late) thing I expected of him. 6. Unfortunately, I haven’t heard (late) news. 7. Who are (old) members of their family? 8. February is (snowy) and (cold) month of the year here. 9. Our house is (far) in the street.

 

Exercise 8. Complete the sentences using the comparative or the superlative form of the adjectives given in brackets.

1. - Boris is certainly (clever) than his elder brother Oleg. – Yes, and he is (attractive) than Oleg. In fact, he’s (smart) boy I’ve ever taught. 2. Nothing could be (extravagant) than buying such an expensive car. You will have to be (careful) with your money in future. 3. Life is getting (hard) and (complicated) with every passing day. 4. It is (effective) method of all, but it is naturally costly. 5. Stephen is (intelligent) than any other boy in his group. 6. It has been (cold) day in Moscow for 30 years. 7. It’s (little) I can do for you, I’m afraid. 8. That was (bad) than she had expected. 9. That was indeed (bad) experience in his career. 10. They naively think that things can only get (good). 11. Exercise 9. Translate into English using the proper degrees of the words in bold

type.
