Task 12. Translate the following sentences into Ukrainian.

1. People go to civil courts to seek remedies – things they are asking the courts to give them.

2. The most common remedy is damages to compensate for a loss.

3. The loss may be something concrete, such as damage to a reputation resulting from a libelous publication.

4. Closely related to damages is restitution, the return of something belonging to e person, such as land or corporate bonds.

5. Another kind of remedy is coercion, in which a party asks the court to require that another party either take a particular action or refrain from an action.

6. The major form of this remedy is an injunction, in which a court can order action such as the halting of a labor strike.

7. The final type is a declaration of legal rights or status, such as the termination оf marriage through divorce or a ruling that a statute is unconstitutional.

Task 13. Translate sentences into Ukrainian (it is recommended to repeat the previous sentence before giving the translation.:

1. Більшість людей мають хибне уявлення про те, що закон є набором відомих правил, що застосовуються суддями.

Task 14. Translate into English:

В США функціонують паралельно єдина федеральна система судів та самостійні судові системи кожного з 50 штатів, округа Колумбія та чотирьох федеральних територій. До компетенції федеральних судів належить, перш за все, розгляд кримінальних справ, що передбачені федеральним законодавством, та цивільних справ за позовами до федеральної влади і за позовами, що виникають у зв’язку з застосуванням федеральних законів між громадянами, які проживають у двох різних штатах, якщо при цьому сума позову перевищує $10,000. З ряду питань компетенція федеральних судів і судів штатів співпадає як з кримінальних так і з цивільних справ, що викликало складні правила розмежування функцій. За певних обставин у обвинувачення та позивача з цивільної справи виникають можливості вибору між зверненням до суду одного з штатів або федерального суду, а в деяких, дуже рідких, випадках допускається звернення до федерального суду зі скаргою по справі, що розглядалась у штаті, але якщо мова йдеться про тлумачення чи застосування норм федерального права. Більша частина кримінальних чи цивільних справ розглядається судами штатів, і лише 5-10% є предметом розгляду федеральних судів.

Task 15. Fill in the gaps using the proper Modal verb can, can’t, may, must, shall.

1. According to Article III of the Constitution “the judicial power of the United States … be vested in one Supreme Court, and in such inferior courts as the Congress … from time to time ordain and establish”.

2. The Supreme Court … alter the Constitution.

3. A Supreme Court Justice … have been a senator, an Attorney General, a teacher in a law school, or even the administrator of an agency that acts like a court.

5. New cases arise, and the law … deal with them. Sometimes Congress passes new laws to deal with new cases.
