LONDON BUSES

While you enjoy the view of London's attractions, London's buses will take you all over the capital. Most London buses are still red, but some are painted in different colours. The old-fashioned, red double-decker Routemaster bus is of course London's most recognizable symbol, but it is a less common sight than it once was. As a result of deregulation and privitization of the city's bus system, there are now many smaller modern buses, some single- decker and some not even red, carrying passengers on London's streets.

With more than 17,000 bus stops all over London, you are never more than a five minute walk from from one. You can board at two types of bus stops: compulsory (where buses will automatically stop, unless they are full) and request (to stop a bus you must put your hand clearly and in good time so that the driver can stop the bus safely, but a bus might not stop if it is already full. In practice it pays to do this at any stop). The signs showing the type of a bus stop differ in colour and a little bit in design.

Make sure you catch a bus going in the right direction. Destinations are shown on the front and rear of buses. If in doubt, check with the driver.

To buy a ticket, have your money ready before you board. The driver or conductor will tell you the fare for your destination and give change (but not for large notes). Keep your ticket until the end of your journey. To stop the bus, press the bell located by the doors or near the stairs, just once.

London's night-time services run on several popular routes from 11pm until 6am. The routes are prefixed with the letter "N" before blue or yellow numbers. All these services pass through Trafalgar Square, so if you are out late, head there to get a ride at least part of the way home.
