Having a roommate can be difficult at times no matter if you live with your best (1) …… or a stranger. The following are some useful hints to help you sustain a peaceful relationship:

Set rules. Create rules with your roommate that both of you agree to follow. Decide when and how many friends to have over, when (2) …… time is, and whether or not you can borrow each other's belongings. Delegate cleaning chores. This may seem elementary because it's one of the reasons that you wanted to move away from your (3) ……, but setting ground (4) …… will make your living situation much easier.

Communicate. In order to maintain a good (5) ……, you must communicate openly with your roommate. Deal with problems immediately. Don't keep a problem to yourself, instead talk to your roomie about it. If your roommate is slacking off on cleaning, tell him/her that since you are cleaning your half, you expect the same in return. If you don't (6) …… with your roommate, then your anger will just grow and lead to major fighting.

Be considerate. Treat others as you would want to be treated. This includes your roommate. If your roommate is sick, offer to take his/her (7) …… to class or make him/her a bowl of soup. If you are nice to your roomie, then hopefully your roommate will remember that the next time you need something.

Be flexible. Be willing to change your daily (8) …… if need be. Sometimes a slight problem may arise that you might have to accommodate for. Your roommate will appreciate your (9) …… and the fact that you are giving him/her some space.

Respect each other. If you don't respect whom you live with, there will definitely be problems. You will not always agree with your (10) ……, but be sure to give him/her the (11) …… that he/she deserves. Remember that your roommate may not agree with everything that you do either.

Exercise 29. Finish the annotation of Annotation text 1 “Living in the residence hall” (AT 1).

The title of the text I have read is “Living in the residence hall.”

The text deals with the importance of such buildings for students’ cognitive and psychosocial growth and development. A number of schemes have been organized to increase roommate compatibility.

The second part deals with

Exercise 30. Watch Video Transcript “Student life” (VT 4) and answer the questions.

1. Are freshmen encouraged to get involved in students life? 2. What is student life involvement aimed at? 3. What does student life provide students with? 4. Which is more important: to build community or to learn outside the classroom? 5. How does the university staff support students’ success? 6. Who acquires valuable skills and experience to succeed in the world? 7. Do students benefit from the available opportunities? 8. Why should students contact the student office? 9. Is it necessary to visit the student web-site? 10. What are some disadvantages of student life?

Exercise 31. You are going to read Internet users’ thoughts on university life, based on their personal experiences. Discuss them with your partner and give your own ideas about living on campus.

BRIANNE: In the long run it can be beneficial to live with 30 other people. These people might turn out to be your best friends. So if you can get over the fact that you are showering with 10 other people or that you will never go to the bathroom alone again, then dorm life will be a breeze. There are plenty of other things about university life that will make up for the living situations, like the irreplaceable friendships you will make.

TERRA: My advice for all of the new freshman out there is to breathe and relax. Of course you’re going to be nervous because everything is so new, but school was like this too. Enjoy it.

KELLEN: Be sure to have something in your room that can be locked to hold those items you want to keep safe. I have a footlocker that I padlock. In it, I store my CDs, video games, blank checks, receipts and other items. Also, room fresheners are a must-have.

SAMANTHA: Keep a planner notebook so you can set up your schedule each day. Make sure you allow time for your studies. Time management is the key to get through university.

JOHN: Keep on top of your work because exams and finals sneak up on you. It’s university and you only have one chance, so make the most of it, get involved and, most important, HAVE FUN!

GORDON: Don’t be afraid to talk to your roommate and tell him or her how you feel. Set some rules when sharing the same space, like lights out by 12:00 a.m. or go to the study room to do homework. Don’t try to get even with your roommate; just try to come up with a better system.

JOCELYN: Understand the value of your education before you lose it. Don’t waste time, money and large portions of your life because it’s more fun to skip class and go out. Listen to someone who has been there and is now working.

Exercise 32. You see this advertisement in an Internet forum. Write your response and answer the question: Are residence halls the same everywhere? Consider some points below.

> What types of residence halls are available for students in your area?

> What problems are there regarding housing for students?

> What improvements should be made?

> How do you think residence halls will develop in the future?
