COMPARATIVE TASKS

The importance of intermodality for the efficient operation of transport and logistical systems and the benefits that intermodality can bring about in reducing external costs of transport have been recognized internationally. In the near future, intermodal freight transportation will become increasingly important, driven by congestion and environmental concerns, the changing requirements of global supply chain systems, and the rapid advancement of information and communication technologies (ICT). Furthermore, the substantial changes that have occurred or are currently occuring in freight transport systems regulations may dramatically affect the use and perfomance of transport systems. · the control of scale effects in highly sophisticated and flexible models such as mixed logit models;

· the use of experimental economics to study, simulate and, possibly, forecast the intricate and complex interrelations of the various actors cooperating and competing along distribution channels; and the accounting of non-linearities in the estimation of models studying choices of manufacturing firms when deciding which transport service to buy;

· the relationship between innovations, both methodological and technological, and specific trends present in urban freight distribution.

3. Driving Forces in Developing Cities’ Transportation Systems: Insights from Selected Cases.
