Елтону Джону вручена нагорода Героя за внесок у боротьбу зі СНІДом

Як відомо, у 1992 році сер Елтон Джон став фундатором добродійного фонду потерпілим від ВІЛ/СНІДу, який зібрав понад 30 мільйонів доларів. Створити такий фонд його спонуала безглузда смерть від СНІДу молодого американця Райана Вайта. З того часу сер Джон став великим опікуном тих, хто страждає від ВІЛ/СНІДу.

В останні роки минулого століття він кілька разів влаштовував ярмарки-розпродажі речей власного гардеробу,а отримані кошти направляв на потреби хворих на СНІД. Лише за результатами проведеної у вересну 2000 року благочинної акції сер Джон віддав у фонд боротьби зі СНІДом 428 тисяч англійських фунтів (619 тисяч американських доларів).

10 січня 2002 року в Лондоні відбулась церемонія вручення нагороди Героя Елтону Джону за величезний внесок у справу боротьби із СНІДом і підтримку тих, хто постраждав від ВІЛ-інфекції. Він став першим лауреатом цієї нагороди. На церемонії вручення прем’єр-міністр Великобританії зазначив, що це цілком справедлива відзнака видатного співака і громадянина.

На церемонії вручення нагороди Елтон Джон виступив з промовою. Він, зокрема, визнав, що уряди деяких країн роблять багато для боротьби з вірусом, але цього недостатньо. За його словами, одна країна не в змозі побороти інфекцію; уряди у всьому світі повинні швидко реагувати на епідемію.

Україна стала другою після Росії країною в Європі за захворюваністю на туберкульоз.

Щогодини в нашій країні занедужують четверо й помирає одна людина. Mortality crisis in Ukraine was the subject of an international conference in Kiev. The conference discussed the results of the research by an international scientists’ team which concentrated on the causes of the problem. The population of Ukraine is shrinking rapidly. Every day 300 people are dying. The average life span for men is falling dramatically. It is 58 years, 16 years less than in Western Europe. Drinking and smoking are the main causes especially among 40-year-olds. Scientists proposed different public health strategies to help Ukrainians live longer.
