My Last Travelling

Modern life is impossible without travelling. Thousands of people travel every day either on business or for pleasure. They can travel by air, by rail, by sea or by road.

The Black Sea is one of the most wonderful places which attracts holiday-makers all over the world. Every year my friend and I go somewhere to the South for holidays. Usually we go there either by train or by car. There are many rest-homes, sanatoriums and tourist camps there. But it is also possible to rent a room or a furnished house for a couple of weeks there. Sometimes we place ourselves in a tent on the sea shore enjoying fresh air and the sun all day long. As a rule I make new friends there. In the daytime we play volleyball, tennis, swim in the warm water of the sea and sunbathe. In the evening I like to sit on the beach watching the sea and enjoying the sunset. I’m fond of mountaineering. So I do a lot of climbing together with my friends.

Time passes quickly and soon we have to make our way back. We return home sunburnt and full of impressions.

Travelling By Train

Train remains the most popular means of transport in our country. A lot of people prefer travelling by train because of speed, comfort and safety.

Not long ago I went to see my friend in Vitebsk. As there was no through train I had to go first to Rudnya and then change the train.

The train was already waiting at the platform when I came to the railway station. I found an empty seat and looked around. Some passengers were reading magazines and newspapers; others were playing cards or talking.

Soon the train started. This was a slow train, so it stopped at all, or nearly all stations on its route.

Looking out of the window I saw fields, meadows and beautiful gardens. Buses were carrying passengers from village to village and trucks were carrying goods. There were also motorcycles and bicycles on the road too.

It took me four hours to get to Vitebsk, but the journey was pleasant. My friend was happy to see me and invited to come again.

Holidays in Russia

There are dates and events in the life of our country that are memorable to every Russian citizen. The dates of this kind are: the Victory Day, May Day, Constitution Day, the Women’s Day, the Day of the Defenders of the Motherland, the Day of Sovereignty of the Russian Federation. These are national holidays, people do not work on these days.

The most memorable date is the Victory Day which is celebrated on May 9 to commemorate the victory of the Russian troops over the Nazi invaders. Love for freedom has been a national character of the Russian people. No enemy has been able to conquer our country. When Russia was attacked by enemies, Russian people rose up in defense of their Motherland.

May Day is regarded as the day of solidarity of the workers of the world. It commemorates the tragic events of the years 1884—1888 in Chicago when the workers were fighting for their rights. Nowadays this holiday is called the Day of Spring and Labour.

Recently new national holidays have been introduced. They are Christmas and Easter. They are of religious origin.

In Russia Christmas is celebrated on January 7. In Europe and in the USA it is observed on December 25. On Christmas people celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Easter symbolizes the Revival of Jesus Christ. For the greater part of people of our country these holidays have lost their religious significance and are the days of family reunion, relax and happiness.

There is one more holiday which is loved both by adults and children. This is New Year’s Day, with a New Year Tree, bells, presents, and Grandpa Frost (European Santa Claus). People believe that a miracle is a must on this holiday. On the New Year night people go to a dance, visit their friends or stay at home and watch TV. Party-goers enjoy a hearty meal. Now January 1 is a national holiday, fortunately for those who like to celebrate most of the night. New Year’s celebrations receive widespread coverage by mass media.

Besides there are a lot of professional holidays which are also celebrated in Russia, for example, Teacher’s day, Doctor’s Day and others.
