My Favourite Holiday

Расскажите о вашем любимом празднике. Используйте следующий текст в качестве образца.

I think all people like holidays, because they don’t work and have a good time. They can visit their friends and relatives, invite guests and have a lot of fun.

There are many different holidays. But our favourite holidays are Christmas and New Year. They are full of magic, presents and hopes. On the 1st of January we celebrate New Year. On the 7th of January we have Christmas.

Every year we have a New Year tree and decorate it with toys, tinsel and coloured lights. We send and get many greeting cards. We buy and give presents to our nearest and dearest. I like to get presents too. Last year my parents gave me a wonderful computer game and many tasty things as a present. Next year I would like to get a puppy, because I like pets and I want to take care of somebody. Puppies are so charming. I’m going to make something with my own hands for my Mum, Dad, Grandpa and Granny.

We usually have a holiday supper with many tasty things. When the clock strikes twelve the grown-ups drink a toast for the New Year and wish “Happy New Year” to each other. Then we dance, sing songs, watch holiday TV or go for a walk and play games. I think it is the best holiday.

Origins of Hallowe'en

Do you know where the name "Halloween" itself came from? It actually comes from two words: "Hallo(s)" – meaning "holy" in ancient English, and quite contemporary "Eve" – meaning the evening before a certain holiday.

Hallowe'en, October 31 is the witchiest night of the year. It is the eve of the Festival of All Hallows, better known as All Saints, but it also coincides with a much older pagan festival - Samhain - which was celebrated by the Druids in honour of the Celtic New Year. And because Samhain marked the end of summer sunshine and the beginning of winter's darkness, it was supposed to herald the arrival of hordes of witches, ghosts and demons. Added to this, the ancient Romans held their Festival of Pomona at about this time of year, Pomona being the goddess of fruit-trees and apples; hence the predominance of apples at Hallowe'en party games. All these ceremonies were grafted one upon the other over the centuries to become our modern Hallowe'en.

In Britain Hallowe'en celebrations have, until recently, been confined largely to the younger generation.

A traditional feature of the children's Hallowe'en party is «love magic». Young girls stand in turn a looking glass at the stroke of midnight and each brushes her hair three times. A face is then supposed to materialise in the mirror - that of the boy whom fate has decreed she will one day marry. Now it is not only children but adults who hold witchy dances and ghost parties, and listen to spine-chilling tales of the ghosts, goblins and witches of Hallowe'en.

Vocabulary:

Hallowe'en — Хэллоуин

witch — зд.: ведьма

ghost —призрак, приведение

demon — дьявольский

goddess — богиня

to be confined to — зд.: ограничиваться, сводиться к

spine-chilling tale — холодящее душу предание

goblin — домовой

Halloween Treats

Here are some recipes of traditional Halloween dishes.

1) Pumpkin Seeds. Collect pumpkin seeds after carving your pumpkin, separate the pulp from the seeds. Rinse the seeds and spread them out to dry. The next day, add enough melted butter or margarine to coat each seed. Spread the seeds onto a cookie sheet and bake for 20 minutes in a 300 degree oven for 20 minutes or until they are slightly brown.

2) Caramel Apples. Take the paper wrapping off about 100 caramels and put them in a saucepan. Put the saucepan over a pan of boiling water. Boil the water until the caramels melt. Put a wooden stick into the top of each apple, dip the apple into the caramel. Let them cool on wax paper and enjoy!

3) Popcorn Balls. Combine 1/2 cup of com syrup, a teaspoon of vinegar and I/ 2 teaspoon of salt in a saucepan. Heat to 250 degrees Fahrenheit or until a small spoonful of the mixture forms a hard ball when dropped into water. Remove from heat and add 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Put warm popped corn in a large greased bowl. Slowly pour the syrup over the popcorn, tossing with a greased fork until mixed thoroughly. Be careful, it's hot! When it's cool enough to handle, butter your hands and shape popped corn into 3-inch balls. Place on waxed paper until cool and no longer sticky, then wrap in waxed paper. ENJOY IT!

Christmas (1)

Christmas Day is celebrated on December 25. Many people look on Christmas as the time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, but really the tradition goes back to the earliest of times.

In those days the sun meant so much to primitive man that when it began to go lower each day till December 23, people thought the sun was going to die out and they were worried. They ate less keeping the food for the next year.

On December 23 the sun stayed in the sky longer and after that the nights were becoming shorter. When this happened, the primitive man was very happy. He even felt he wanted to celebrate it.

Later it became a tradition to celebrate it at the end of December with presents and plenty of eating. Now Christmas tree stands in everybody’s living-room at Christmas. The first weekday after Christmas is а рublic holiday. In England it is called Boxing Day. In past times it was the traditional day to give presents to servants. This day is called Boxing Day because at one time the presents were put in boxes (Christmas boxes). Usually Boxing Day is December 26, but if Christmas Day falls on a Saturday, Boxing Day is on December 27.

Not all Christmas traditions are old. The first Christmas card was made only in 1842 by an English painter who sent that card to one hundred of his friends. Now millions of Christmas cards are sent and received.

Christmas is a time for eating. The traditional food is turkey, Christmas cake, Christmas pudding made of fruit. Some families make pudding a year before they eat it. Believe it or not, in a year they eat the pudding with great pleasure.
