I. GRAMMAR: a) revision:

Ex. 1. Fill in the blanks with prepositions:

Ex. 3. Use one of the following verbs to complete the sentences. Sometimes you need the negative:

Ex. 5. Put the verb in the correct form:

1. Julia is very good at languages. She … (speak) 4 languages very well. 2. Hurry up! Everybody … (wait) for you. 3. “… (you/listen) to the radio?” “No, you can turn it off.” 4. “… (you/listen) to the radio every day?” “No, just occasionally.” 5. b) new material: types of questions (типы вопросов).

1. Общий вопрос (General Question) начинается со вспомогательного глагола, требующего ответа «да» или «нет». Относится к содержанию предложения в целом. Is Nick busy? – No, he is not.

Do you work? – Yes, I do.

2. Специальный вопрос (Special Question) относится к одному из членов предложения. Начинается с вопросительного слова, за которым следует вспомогательный глагол: What is this?

Where is he?

В вопросе к подлежащему и определению подлежащего сохраняется прямой порядок слов: Who lives in Moscow?

Whose mother works at a factory?

3. Альтернативный вопрос (Alternative Question) состоит из двух частей, соединенных союзом or (или). Его первая часть строится по типу общего вопроса: Is it a pen or a pencil?

4. Разделительный вопрос (Disjunctive Question) состоит из двух частей –повествовательного проедложения и краткого вопроса. К утвердительному предложению прибавляется отрицательный вопрос: This is a map, isn’t it? И наоборот: This isn’t a map, is it? Вторая часть на русский язык переводится “не так ли; не правда ли; правда?”

Ex. 1. Put general questions to the following sentences:

1. Ann lives in the suburbs of Moscow. 2. Bob gets up at 7 o’clock in the morning. 3. Sometimes she has dinner at home. 4. In the evening Mr.Brane works in his garden. 5. After supper they usually watch TV. 6. Harry goes to his office by bus. 7. He generally leaves home at 8 o’clock. 8. You do your morning exercises every day. 9. Her friend gets to town by train. 10. It takes him long to reach the University.

Ex.2. Put alternative questions to the following sentences using the words in brackets:

1. The film is interesting (dull). 2. You have many English books at home (few). 3. Harry lives in London (Liverpool). 4. His father leaves home early (late). 5. Lucy is usually busy till 4 o’clock (6 o’clock). 6. Our students have lunch after classes (before classes). 7. They are at the lecture now (at the meeting). 8. We are free tomorrow (the day after tomorrow). 9. There are many people in the dining-room now (few). 10. There is much ink in your pen (little).

Ex. 3. Put disjunctive questions to the following sentences:

1. Sometimes you work at the library after classes. 2. The students usually leave the Institute late. 3. Your classes generally begin at 6.30 p.m. 4. It takes you long to get home. 5. Harry has a family of his own. 6. Your friend is about twenty years old. 7. Those girls are sisters. 8. Alice is ill today. 9. You are busy now. 10. Mr.Green is free at the week-end. 11. You do not have dinner at home. 12. They have a big library. 13. Ann does not usually have supper. 14. It is not cold today. 15. English is not difficult. 16. They have no TV-set. 17. The Browns’ family do not watch TV every evening.

Ex. 4. Put questions to the words in italics:

1. My brother gets up at 6 o’clock in the morning. 2. They sometimes go to the cinema or to the theatre. 3. His office is near the Metro station. 4. Her friend is a worker. He is 20 years old. 5. On coming home my father usually has dinner. 6. Tom has two children. 7. These are French newspapers. 8. There is little ink in the pen. 9. Harry gets to London by train because he lives in the suburbs. 10. It takes her 15 minutes to have breakfast.

Ex. 5. Put questions of all types to the following sentences:

Ann speaks German well.

My parents live in a very small flat.

I am going to the University.

He is not looking at you now.

Ex. 6. Translate these questions into English:
