Diplomatic terminology

Ex.1 Match the following words and expressions with their corresponding definitions:

Diplomatic passport, visa, diplomatic recognition, inviolability, precedence, ambassador, diplomatic immunity, accreditation, embassy, persona non-grata, chargé d’affaires, diplomatic list;

a) formal acknowledgement of the legal existence of one state or government by another;

b) a diplomatic agent of the highest rank accredited to a foreign government or sovereign as the resident representative of his own government (also called “chief of mission” or “ head of mission”);

c) the offices of a diplomatic mission comprising the chancery and ambassador’s residence;

d) a list published by host country indicating all accredited of diplomatic corps (including spouses) and address of residence;

e) formal document indicating the position and status of a diplomatic agent;

f) exemption of diplomatic agents, premises etc. under international convention from civil and criminal jurisdiction;

g) an endorsement made on a passport by a proper authority;

h) the act of sending an envoy (normally an ambassador) with letters of credence (credentials) guaranteeing his status from the Head of his state or government to the head of another state or government;

i) the formal ranking of diplomatic agents and other government officials;

j) an embassy official who takes charge of the mission in the absence of the ambassador;

k) literally, “an unaccepted person”;

l) the principle of exempting diplomatic premises and personnel and their families from local jurisdiction.

Ex. 3 Formulate questions from each part and ask your classmates to answer them:

Diplomacy is the art and practice of conducting negotiations between accredited persons representing groups or nations. In an informal or social sense, diplomacy is the employment of tact to gain strategic advantage.

One of a class of state officials who are entrusted with the responsibility for representing their state and its interests and welfare and that of its citizens or subjects in the jurisdiction of another state or in international organizations. Diplomatic agents can be generally classified into two groups: (1) heads of mission and (2) members of the staff of the mission having diplomatic rank.
