What do you know about this organization? When was it founded?

The United Nations, an organization of sovereign nations representing almost all of humanity, has its central goal the maintenance of international peace and security. It came into existence on October 24,1945, after the end of the Second World War. Then the fifty nations gathered at San Francisco "to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war".

Today more than three times that number of States are Members of UN representing almost all the peoples of the world. They have joined the Organization with a pledge to work together in the search for peace, justice and progress and to use the United Nations as "a center for harmonizing the actions of nations" in the attainment of these common ends.

The UN's other main purposes under the CHARTER are to develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the equal rights and self-determination of peoples.

There are many examples where the United Nations has played, and continues to play, an active part in reducing tensions, preventing conflicts or putting an end to fighting already under way. There is also today a whole range of problems which can only be dealt with through international co-operation — energy, the environment, outer space, the sea-bed, economic and social development, international trade and many other areas of world concern. The United Nations Headquarters is in New York on Manhattan's East Side between the East River and United Nations Plaza (a stretch of First Avenue).

The Headquarters complex is dominated by the 39-storey Secretariat Building.

There are six main organs of the United Nations — the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council, the International Court of Justice and theSecretariat. All are based at United Nations Headquarters in New York, except the Court, which is located at the Hague, in Netherlands.

Six languagesare used officially in the General Assembly — Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian andSpanish.

Ukraine hasbeen one of the Member States of the United Nations since its foundation.
