Read the extracts from an article quickly and match the teenagers with their parents

Generation Gap

Read the text below. Find the reasons for the conflicts between generations in the text.

The generation gap is a gap between the views of the younger generation of teenagers and the views of their parents. Many parents in the US want their children to be creative and question what is around them. In a democratic society, American children are taught not to obey blindly anything that is told them. Later, as adults, they will be able to add their voices and their votes to the American democracy.

When children become teenagers they question the values of their parents. This is a part of growing up that helps teenagers form their own values. When American parents and teenagers do argue, usually it is about simple things. Three most common reasons are the teenagers’ schoolwork, help about the house and the teenagers’ attitude towards another family member. Arguments which involve drug or alcohol use occur in a much smaller group of families. The majority of parents say that their children share their beliefs and values, most teenagers rely on their parents for guidance and advice more than on their friends. There are differences in tastes and fashions, of course, but parents make a lot effort to meet their children’s interests and spend more time together, talk about their problems and try to solve them. Both parents and children tend to be tolerant and show respect to each other’s views, even if arguing.

4) Answer the questions:

What is a generation gap?

What are the main reasons for arguments between the younger and the older generations (base on the text and share your idea, for example: feeling of denial, little respect, differences in tastes, use of drugs or alcohol, child’ laziness).

What are the possible ways to solve the generation gap problem according to the text? Do you agree or disagree?

What ideas (things) you don’t like about the text? Why?

Is there such a thing as Generation Gap in your family?

What do you argue with your parents mostly about?

Do you rely on your parents’ judgement and advice, or would you rather consult your friends?

Do your parents criticize the way you dress or cut your hair?

Is it important to talk about your problems before they get too big to solve?

Do your parents ever abuse you, physically or morally?

1) What sorts of problems might teenagers have? Think about: school, family and home, friends.

3) Scan the following text again and find the words / phrases bearing the meaning: embarrassed, spoke or acted in an untrue way, someone who can help you to make decisions, not go, someone who forces others to do things, a temporary period of time, changed the colour, very unhappy.
