Post-Graduate Study

Graduates who are well disposed towards research work may continue studying as postgraduates. These courses are in two categories:

a). "Aspirantura" — the first level of post-graduate study in Russia takes 3-5 years in order to pass three candidate's examinations on the subjects of philosophy, foreign language and the special discipline in accordance with the theme of the dissertation and to write the candidate's dissertation - Ph.D. thesis. After defending a candidate's dissertation one gets a Degree of Candidate of Science — which equals the western Ph.D.

b). "Doctorantura" — this is the highest level of post-graduate study in Russia, which takes an additional 3 years after the Aspirantura and is to prepare scientific and pedagogic specialists of the highest qualification. After defending a doctor's dissertation one is awarded with the Senior Doctoral Degree. This degree has no analogues in the world outside Russia, except in Germany, but is held by the western world as equivalent to their Ph.D., but in fact involves 3 more years of study compared to a western Ph.D. To become a Professor in Russia one must first complete this Docorantura in Russia.
