Why Home Is Definitely Where the Heart Is

The big pull for housewife wanna-bes seems to be hang-time, a rare commod­ity for do-it-all dames. "While having it all - a career and a family - seems good in theory, it looks impossible to juggle both without going crazy," says Lisa, a 24-year-old events planner who's going to "relax at home" after her upcoming wedding. "I'd choose spending time with my fam­ily and friends any day over a pile of money in the bank." According to Buckingham, more young women are coming around to Lisa’s mind-set (but granted, not every­one can afford to make it a reality). Time to nurture relationships — not money — seems to stand as the new millennium’s ultimate status symbol. In fact, 70 percent of women surveyed said they'd rather work fewer hours than rake in more dough, and family and friends topped their free-time to-do lists — and that's above sleeping, working out, and watching TV.

Understandable, isn't it? Who hasn't, during a stressful workweek, dreamed of telling her boss to shove it, then going to sip Frappuccinos in a park with some pals? But whether the reality of being a housewife is all it's cracked up to be is another story. "Although I do dream of keeping house, I really wonder whether I'd feel like less of a person without some­thing outside the home to define who I am," says Deborah, a 24-year-old editor. "The one time I do have the fantasy of staying home is when I get scared I won't succeed, and I just want to run away and hide. But I feel it's a risk I have to take. Sure work is tough, but becoming a housewife sounds like a deceptively easy way out. " So before you hand in your res­ignation letter, maybe you should try a two-week vacation. Who knows? Visions of doing deals and catching key clients may start dancing in your head.

Leadership and management are two notions that are often used interchangeably. However, these words actually describe two different concepts. In this section, we shall discuss these differences and explain why both terms are thought to be similar.

Leadership is just one of the many assets a successful manager must possess. Care must be taken in distinguishing between the two concepts. The main aim of a manager is to maximise the output of the organisation through administrative implementation. To achieve this, managers must undertake the following functions: organisation, planning, staffing, directing, controlling.

Leadership is just one important component of the directing function. A manager cannot just be a leader, he also needs formal authority to be effective. "For any quality initiative to take hold, senior management must be involved and act as a role model. This involvement cannot be delegated."

In some circumstances, leadership is not required. For example, self motivated groups may not require a single leader and may find leaders dominating. The fact that a leader is not always required proves that leadership is just an asset and is not essential.
