Text 4 Other methods of finishing

Finishing on web presses Web presses can be fitted with a variety of attachments to produce a finished product without further off-the-press operations being necessary. These facilities can include sheeting, scoring, perforating, wire-stitching, gluing and envelope making.

Collating As well as the collating done in bookbinding in the gathering process, there are also collating machine for assembling individual sheets (A4 size, for example) to produce reports and manuals.

Loose-leaf binding A growth area is the loose-leaf binding of reports and computer manuals. Plastic ring binders are popular; they are made by specialist suppliers. Other methods include plastic-slide or post binders.

Embossing This is normally carried out on letterpress printing machines or die-stamping machines (see Die stamping, page 31). 'Blind-embossing', the creation of a raised image without ink, is often used for letterheads. Paper or board can also be embossed overall before or after printing on special roller-embossing machines.

Die-cutting This is known also as 'cutting and creasing'. A forme is made consisting of knives — blunt for creasing and sharp for cutting — and placed in the bed of a converted letterpress machine or a special cutting-and-creasing machine. The process is used mainly for cartons, where irregular shapes have to be cut out and the box corners scored.

Round cornering This can be done on a cutting-and-creasing machine or on a special 'round-cornering machine', which has a tool shaped like a chisel with a curved cutting edge. This technique is often used for bibles.

Box making Cartons are made up on special machines that glue the joints together.

Varnishing A gloss finish can be achieved by applying lacquer or varnish after printing. This can be done by printing a varnish on the normal printing machine or by 'spirit varnishing' on a special machine. Very high gloss can be achieved using an ultraviolet (UV) cured lacquer. In this process, the lacquer is applied by a roller and then dried with UV lamps. Most paperback books and many cartons have this finish.

Laminating Here gloss and protection are achieved by applying a sheet of clear film to the printed matter. Cellulose acetate is used for very high gloss, and oriented polypropylene (OPP) where the laminate needs to fold without cracking.

Addressing and mailing Although not strictly part of the finishing process, many finishing departments include facilities for addressing and mailing; this particularly applies with magazines and journals, where the publisher asks the printer/finisher to address and mail subscription copies.

Addressing machines can range from those that simply apply a preprinted address label to sophisticated computers that print out the labels while the copies are running through the machine. The more sophisticated machines can also batch the copies for different postal regions or countries. The labels here are often produced by ink-jet or laser printing.
