Ex.1.15. Study the following table. Get ready to explain what the difference between the words mentioned in it is. Give their Russian equivalents

salary // wage // wages // pay // fee
Professional people such as teachers, doctors, etc. and people who work in offices, receive a salary every year. It is paid once a month, usually directly into a bank account: ‘I’ll pay you back at the end of the month when I get my salary.’
Wagesare paid weekly (sometimes daily) and usually in cash: ‘He opened the envelope and counted his wages.’ When you are thinking about rates or levels of payment (rather than actual coins and bank notes), use wage: ‘She earns a pretty good wage.’ ‘They’ve raised the minimum wage from $4.25 an hour to $5.50.’
Payis a general word for the (amount of) money people get for the work they do: ‘He’s lost a month’s pay.’ ‘They’ve been given a pay rise of $20 a week.’ The day of the week or month when this money is received is your pay-day.
You pay a fee to somebody who provides a professional service: ‘I thought the lawyer’s fees were rather high.’

Ex.1.17. Discuss the following quotations about Life and Living with your groupmates. Say which of them – if any - reflects your point of view.

1) What a queer thing Life is! So unlike anything else, don’t you know, if you see what I mean (P.G.Wodehouse, My Man Jeeves)

2) As life goes on, don’t you find that all you need is about two real friends, a regular supply of books, and a dog? (P.G.Wodehouse, letter 28 October 1930)

3) If A is a success in life, then A equals x plus y plus z. Work is x; y is play; and z is keeping your mouth shut (Albert Einstein, in Observer 15 January 1950)

4) Oh, isn’t life a terrible thing, thank God? (Dylan Thomas, Under Milk Wood)

5) Life, you know, is rather like opening a tin of sardines. We are all of us looking for the key. And, I wonder, how many of you here tonight have wasted years of your lives looking behind the kitchen dressers of this life for that key. I know I have. Others think they’ve found the key, don’t they? They roll back the lid of the sardine tin of life, they reveal the sardines, the riches of life, therein, and they get them out, they enjoy them. But, you know, there’s always a little bit in the corner you can’t get out. I wonder – I wonder, is there a little bit in the corner of your life? I know there is in mine (Alan Bennett, in Beyond the Fringe)

6) Life is a gamble at terrible odds – if it was a bet, you wouldn’t take it (Tom Stoppard, Rozencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead)

7) I love living. I have some problems with my life, but living is the best thing they’ve come up with so far (Neil Simon, Last of the Red Hot Lovers)

8) Life is something to do when you can’t go to sleep (Fran Lebowitz, Metropolitan Life)

9) Alun’s life was coming to consist more and more exclusively of being told at dictation speed what he knew (Kingsley Amis, The Old Devils)

10) Life is a sexually transmitted disease (Anonymous: graffito found on the London Underground)

11) …There’s no need to worry – whatever you do, life is hell (Wendy Cope, Advice to Young Women)
