EXERCISE 17.

A) READ KARL ALBRECHT’S LETTER. CAN YOU GIVE HIM ADVICE?

Dear Mrs. Gently, Have you any quick, simple suggestions for how I can reduce the stress I'm under at work? I'm a manager in a large bank, and between company politics, customers who don't pay back their loans, and my heavy workload, I find myself under what seems to be unrelenting stress and pressure at work. The stress is beginning to affect my work and family life, and any suggestions would be appreciated. Karl Albrecht

B) READ MRS GENTLY’S ADVICE. DO YOU AGREE WITH THE SUGGESTIONS HOW TO REDUCE STRESS?

Dear Karl! I suggest the following things to reduce stress at the job: · Build rewarding, pleasant; cooperative relationships with as many of your colleagues and employees as you can. · Don't bite off more than you can chew. Take only those assignments that you know you have time for. · Build an effective and supportive relationship with your boss. · Negotiate deadlines on important projects with your boss. Be prepared to propose deadlines yourself. · Study the future. Learn as much as you can about likely coming events. · Make a noise survey of your office area and find ways to reduce unnecessary racket. · Get away from your office from time to time for a change of scene and a change of mind. · Reduce the amount of trivia to which you give your attention. Delegate routine paperwork to others whenever possible. · Make a constructive "worry list." Write down the problems that concern you and beside each write down what you are going to do. Mrs. Gently.

C) WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING SUGGESTIONS DOES THE AUTHOR MAKE? SAY TRUE OR FALSE

1. Suggest your own deadlines, rather than waiting for your boss to give them to you.

2. Try not to think about what will happen in the future.

3. Never allow interruptions.

4. Give work to other employees, if possible, rather than doing everything yourself.

5. Don't spend time thinking about problems.

6. Take on as much work as you can, without worrying about how much time it will take.

7. Try to understand your boss's point of view.

8. Postpone taking action on a problem if you know it will upset you.
