Military education and training is a process which intends to establish and improve the capabilities of military personnel.

A professional military education is an absolute imperative for leaders in today’s Armed Forces.

Military education can be voluntary or compulsory duty. There are two ways into the military: enrollment at a military academy or enlistment in the Armed Forces. After enlistment, new Army recruits undergo Basic Combat Training. Before any person get authorization to operate technical equipment or be on the battle field, he or she has to take a medical and often a physical test. If passed, he or she may begin primary training. The primary training is recruit training. Recruit training attempts to teach the basic information and training in techniques necessary to be an effective service member. To achieve this, recruits are drilled physically and psychologically. The drill instructor has the task of making the service members fit for military use. Thus, the basic military training is a nine week period during which the military trains recruits to be soldiers.

In the United States, recruit training in the Army is called Basic Combat Training (BCT) and in the Marine Corps and Navy it is called boot camp as the Marine Corp term for inexperienced Marines is “boot”. The term is also used for the general training period they spend there before get to their own combat or other units, where besides refresher courses they may also be given more job-specific training. The training regularly includes physical fitness, and instruction in military courtesy, tradition, history and uniform care and wear.

Army and Marine recruits are trained in basic marksmanship with individual weapons, field maintenance of weapons, hand-to-hand combat, physical fitness training, first aid and basic survival techniques. Navy and Coast Guard training focuses on water survival training, physical fitness, basic seamanship, and skills such as shipboard firefighting, basic engineering, and signals. Air force training includes physical fitness training, military and classroom instructions, as well as field training in basic marksmanship, first aid, and protective equipment usage.

After finishing basic training, many service members undergo advanced individual training in line with their chosen specialties. This range from navy training to studies of explosives. In advanced training, military technology and equipment is often taught.

Many large countries have several military academies, that offer college degrees in a variety of subjects, similar to other colleges. The academies are elite colleges, which focus on military trainings and require applicants to provide a recommendation from an elected official or high-ranking military official. Academy graduates usually ranks as officers. Major military academies, such as the US Military Academy at West Point, are among the most prestigious schools in the USA.

The U.S. Armed Forces have ROTC (the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) programs. ROTC produced 60 percent of all officers in the U.S. Armed Forces, and 75 percent of U.S. Army officers. ROTC is a leadership training program which trains future Army officers. It focuses on leadership development, problem solving, strategic planning and professional ethics.

ROTC is a college-based program. The students are qualified to become officers by the time they graduate from college.

In the United States Armed Forces, Officer Candidate School (OCS) is a training program for non-commissioned officers, soldiers, sailors, Marines, airmen and recent college graduates earn commissions as officers. The courses include classroom instruction in military subjects, physical training, and leadership.

The Officer Candidate School of the United States Army is a 14 week long program.

People may earn a commission in the United States Armed Forces through OCS, by staff appointment, through Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC), or through military academies.
