Текст 4.

The 21st century has transformed the nature of army work. Modern-day military equipment requires more intellect and know-how than physical strength. This applies to logistic as well as combat units. And although opinions differ over whether women may or may not take part in combat operations, in many countries they are often found at the front lines. In Norway, for instance, a woman is a lieutenant commander in charge of a torpedo submarine. What’s more, all NATO countries are conducting a military reform that will see further integration of women in the armed forces, with their number increasing according to schedule. Thus in the Netherlands women will make up 12% of the army personnel by 2010.

The first to start army feminization were the pragmatic Americans. In 1971, women made up 1,6% of U.S. army personnel.

Today, around 15% of U.S. officers and GIs are women. More than 50 U.S. military women hold the rank of general or admiral.

In the RF Armed Forces today, nine percent of the personnel are women, but they mostly work as auxiliaries.

Military Education

A professional military education is an absolute imperative for leaders in today’s Army. The military environment is constantly changing, and soldier must remain current in order to have a competent Army. Noncommissioned officers are responsible for the individual training of soldiers. This great responsibility requires that they receive excellent training in military skills and professional leadership.

The most important leadership skills development available to noncommissioned officers is provided in the NCOES training courses. There are four levels primary, basic, advanced and senior.

The Primary Leadership Development Course (PLDC) is for specialists and corporals and is designed to teach them the professional leadership skills necessary to perform as a sergeant. It is four weeks long and taught at NCO academies worldwide. Attendance is competitive and usually based on a local order of merit list.

The Basic Noncommissioned Officers Course (BNCOC) represents the next level of the NCOES. This course of instruction prepares sergeants for promotion to staff sergeant. There are two types of BNCOC courses. Soldier leaders from direct combat-related fields receive combat-critical training in operating and employing their weapons in a combat like environment. The emphasis is on teaching these sergeants how to train their crews, section, or squads in combat-critical tasks. These courses are taught at the NCO academies, and local commanders decide who will attend. The course of instruction differs significantly for combat support and combat service support soldiers.

The Advanced Noncommissioned Officers Course (ANCOC) represents the advanced level of training given to staff sergeants and sergeants first class to prepare them for platoon sergeant and similar duties. The classes are taught at the service schools, but much of the common core curriculum is developed by the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy.

Military education training at the most senior level is accomplished through training at the Sergeants Major Course (SMC) taught at the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy. Selection into the SMC is highly selective. The course of instruction is twenty-two weeks long, and only two resident classes are taught each year. Noncommissioned officers in the selection zone may also request an alternate seat at either the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy or the U.S. Air Force NCO Academy. There are also opportunities to take a corresponding studies program. The training closely coincides with the material taught at the SMC and is open to sergeant first class (promotable) through sergeant major. The corresponding studies program is also competitive and based on a DA selection board.
