Britain is not very famous for its athletes but a lot of sports come from this country.

Golf was first played in Scotland in the 15th century and the most fa­mous golf club, Saint Andrews ['seint' aendru:z] in Scotland, is still the most respected one in the world.

Cricket ['knkit] was first played in England in the 16th century and its rules were written in the 18th century.

Nineteenth-century team sports, such as football, rugby ['rAgbi] and hockey, started in British schools in the 19th century. The rules for those games were written in the same century.

Text At College

(Л Letter from a Russian Student)

Some time ago I got a letter from my Russian friend Olga. She is in her first year at college and she studies tourism business like me. It's always interesting to read her letters. This time she writes about her college and studies. Here is her letter.

Dear Amy,

Thank you for your letter. It was very interesting to me to read about your life. Now I'd like to answer your questions about my college and studies.

Our educational system is different from yours. As you know I study at college like you but I won't get a higher education when I leave it. I'm only going to get a vocational education and after that I can go to uni­versity.

But let me start from the beginning. In June I got my school-leaving certificate. I passed my exams quite well and my parents wanted me to go to university. But I was very tired of my last year at school and decided to get a profession sooner. I chose tourism.

To tell the truth I thought it would be easier. We've got a long list of subjects that are quite new. They are Philosophy, Economics, Man-

agement, Marketing, Finance, Insurance and a lot of other subjects closely connected with tourism. At first I was surprised but now I un­derstand why we study all those things. Tourism is really a complicated system. My best subject is Economics. My teacher says I am making progress and I'm going to take an extra curriculum course in that subject.

We have lectures, seminars and practical classes. I like it better than the school system of lessons and tests. Lectures are sometimes really inter­esting and I try to put down everything. Seminars are not an easy thing and it takes me long to get ready for them. Practical classes are the best. They give us the practical skills that we'll need when we start working.

Our academic year consists of two terms. At the end of each term there are tests and exams. Then we have holidays.

Our college is an old two-storey building but it is convenient and clean. Besides classrooms and labs we've got an assembly hall, a library, a can­teen and a gym. Near the college there is a small park and a sports ground where we play sports games if the weather is good.

I'm getting more and more interested in tourism business and I think I'll go on studying after college. And what about you? Could you tell me about your college, please?
