Text 2. Recruitment procedure

The process of finding people for a particular job is recruitment or hiring. Someone who has been recruited is a recruit, or a hire. The company employs or hires them; they join the company. A company may recruit employees directly or use outside recruiters, recruitment agencies or employment agencies. Outside specialist called headhunters may be called on to headhunt people for very important jobs, persuading them to leave the organizations they already work for. This process is called headhunting.

One of the most widely used methods of recruitment is job advertising. Job ads are placed in daily newspapers and in trade and professional publications, or on radio and television. Such ads describe the job opening and the recruitments or qualifications needed for this position. Research shows that the effectiveness of advertising is limited.

Both state and private employment agencies can be helpful in recruiting new employees. State employment agencies register unemployed persons so they could get unemployment compensation and help them find the job. Private employment agencies are sometimes called “headhunters”. They charge fee for their services and concentrate on executive recruiting. One of the fasters-growing areas of recruiting is the use of temporary help hired through employment agencies for period of time specified by the business which need temporary employees.

Many organizations involve their employees in the recruiting process. They can refer an employee to hire. The drawback to the use of employee referrals is that people have a tendency to refer only close friends and relatives.

Walk-ins/ write-ins are also a source of qualified recruits. People can come or write to an organization with a positive corporate image.

Recruiting on college and university campuses is a common practice of both private and public organizations. Usually, organizations send one or more recruiters to the campus for initial interviews. Before conducting interviews applicants’ resumes are reviewed.

In most large- and middle-sized organizations, the human resource department is responsible for recruiting. These departments usually have employment office with the personnel who handle the recruitment activities. The role of its employees is important. They must have communication and interpersonal skills to do their job effectively.
