Introduction to the theme

As an introduction to the lesson “Countries and cities” for students a teacher may say that the country is so big and it differs not only in nature and climate but also in people who live in different regions. Different regions of the country are differently urbanized. The life in the city and life in the country is very different.

LEXICAL EXERCISES

I.Ask students to organise the words into two groups: describing towns/cities and describing countryside

READING

I. Ask students to read the description of the picture “Mr. and Mrs Andrew” of one of the most famous painters of 18th century Britain, Thomas Gainsborough. Pay attention and practice the vocabulary underlined.

SPEAKING PRACTICE

I. Ask students describe the picture of a well known.Russian painter Vasili Surikov, “Taking a snow fortress” 1891 and describe it using the Present Continuous Tense, and the underlined vocabulary from the previous exercise.

Background Here is a painting that shows the continuity between the Maslenitsa celebrations of the past and the modern festivities. It is FUN to be Orthodox. Orthodox people know how to laugh well because they know to discipline themselves as well. To everything, there is a season, as the Scripture says. The traditional faith and the customs t encapsulate it. If you take away the customs, there is no framework, and the faith dies. It is truly that simple. Party Hearty! It’s the Orthodox thing to do!

II.Ask students to write the conversation between Steve and James in the correct order and guess what they are used for.

James: Oh, hi, Steve. How are you?

Steve: Fine, thanks. And you? What are you doing these days?

James: Well, I am training to be manager.

Steve: Really? Are you enjoying it?

James: Yes, it’s quite interesting. How about you?

Steve: Well, I am not working at the moment, but I’m very busy. I am building a house.

James: Oh, how interesting! Are you doing it alone?

Steve: No, my friends help me.

III.Ask students to choose one of the photos and make up a conversation between these people.
