The Executive Branch of Power in the USA




Unit VIII

Ex. I. Read the following words and word combinations. Translate the sentences into Russian.

 

1. to vest облекать, наделять (правами, властью) They are vested with the authority to police the stadium.
2. to implement выполнять, осуществлять; вводить в действие Attempts to implement these proposals have met with strong opposition.
3. federal agency федеральный орган, федеральная служба Independent federal agencies are law enforcement agencies.
4. administration применение (норм права) The Cabinet and independent agencies do their best to see the day-to-day enforcement and administration of federal laws.
5. to nominate выдвигать, предлагать кандидата (на должность) The President has the power to nominate the highest officials in the executive branch.
6. to negotiate вести переговоры When national leaders negotiate a treaty they discuss it before reaching agreement.
7. to sign into law подписать и тем самым придать силу закона The President has the power to sign legislation into law.
8. to enact принимать (закон) The government should enact legislation to limit the powers of the police in such cases.
9. to convict осудить He was convicted of the murder of his wife.
10. to commit a crime совершить преступление In many legal systems it is an important principle that a person cannot be considered guilty of a crime until the state proves he committed it.
11. office должность The President cannot be removed from office by vote of no confidence.
12. to assume принимать на себя (ответственность, обязанность, власть) In recent years the federal government has assumed broader responsibility in such matters as health, education, transportation etc.
13. incapacitation ограничение право - и/или дееспособности Because of the President’s temporary (временный) incapacitation the Vice-President had to perform his duties.
14. a tie разделение голосов поровну It is called a tie when the two opposing sites have equal votes.
15. to cast подавать (голос при голосовании) If the two opposing sites have equal votes the President of the Senate casts the decisive vote.
16. entity самостоятельное образование, самостоятельная правовая единица The two countries fought for the right to become separate entities.
