Rewrite the sentences in the passive where possible, as in the example.

Rephrase the sentences in two ways, as in the example.

Impersonal Passive

Use impersonal constructions for verbs without an object (intransitive verbs) to form passive sentences, e.g. he says – it is said

In English, Impersonal Passive is only possible with verbs of perception (e. g. say, think, know). e.g. They say that women live longer than men. – It is said that women live longer than men. They say that women live longer than men. – Women are said to live longer than men.

3. John teaches English.

4. German is spoken in Austria.

5. Lots of houses were destroyed by the earthquake.

6. Henry Ford invented the assembly line.

7. The car driver was hurt.

8. You should open your workbooks.

9. Houses have been built every year.

1. Somebody stole his car.

2. Jane and Robert have sent the books to the wrong address.

3. Somebody will bring the beer.

4. Mary has bought this fur coat.

5. Somebody has left this umbrella behind.

6. They haven't caught the robbers yet.

7. I don't drink ice-cold beer in England.

8. We eat a lot of fish.

9. You drink tea with milk at least five times a day.

10. They discuss the weather every day.
