Sail Away

Ask anyone to name the ultimate luxury holiday and there is the chance they will say it is a cruise. It conjures up (= вызвать в памяти) images of elegantly-dressed people promenading on a moonlit deck with strains (= мелодии) of “the anniversary Waltz” floating out to sea. Of rich, there are elderly people with time on their hands and desire to see the world in style. But although the romance of the golden age of cruising remains, the average age of today’s passengers is far cry (= зд. сильно отличаться) from the beshawled, blanketed image of yesterday. The superb range of leisure activities and wealth of entertainment made cruising a godsend for families. Parents can relax and enjoy themselves in the sure knowledge that their children are in good hands in the “Kids centre”.

But for young and old alike the appeal (= привлекательность) of a cruising holiday is ability to move effortlessly from one place to another. To this cruise lines have put a lot of time and effort into developing their shore excursion programmes. Nowadays they can include activities as trucking (= поедка на грузовиках или джипах) in the Malaysian jungle, catching fish in the fjords, landing on a mighty glacier (= ледник) or clambering over the Greek mountains. That is, if you’ve got time to spare with so many exciting onboard activities to choose from, you can try youir hands at anything from aerobics to scuba diving. Evening entertainment continues far into night with casino, cinemas, and discos just a short walk away from their beds. Another major advantage of cruising is the superb standard service. You can wine and dine through to the early hours.
