Past Continuous

 

1. Past Continuous is used to express activity in progress in the past.

e.g. There was an awful noise in your house last night. What were you doing?

2. It is used to describe a situation or activity during a period in the past.

e.g. I was reading a book during the flight.

3. It is often used to either with Past Simple to say that something happened in the middle of something else.

e.g. When I saw Jim in the park he was sitting on the grass and reading a book.

4. It is used to express an activity in progress at a particular time in the past.

e. g. At 7.00 this morning I was having breakfast.

Note: If we say that one thing happened after another we use Past Simple for both actions.

Compare: When Tom arrived we were watcing TV.

When Tom arrived we watched TV (= Tom arrived and then we watched TV).

 

 

1. Past Perfect is used to say that one action in the past or a particular time in the past.

e. g. When we arrived home Anna had gone to bed.

He had finished his work by 6 o’clock yesterday.

 

 

We use Past Perfect Continuous to say how long something had been happening before something else happened

e.g. He had been smoking for 30 years when he finally gave up.

 

Compare:

When I arrived they had been watching TV for 2 hours. (= уже отсмотрели)

When I arrived they had already watched TV. (= уже посмотрели)

When I arrived they were watching TV. (= в это время смотрели)

When I arrived they watched TV. (= затем помотрели)
