Penang, Pearl of Orient

Lying just off the north-west coast of the Malaysian Peninsula, its shores lapped by the warm waters of the Straits of Malacca. Penang, the Pearl of Orient, is an island of bright beauty – the premier holiday resort of Malaysia. Exotic, exciting, mysterious and splendidly charismatic, its appeal is instant.

Tall coconut palms fringe its braches of fine white sand. Its climate is tropical – hot and humid, with the temperature seldom dropping below 20 degrees centigrade even at night and usually rising to 30 degrees centigrade during the day. And its hospitable people are among the friendliest in the world.

Georgetown, the capital is a delight – a sapling (= зд. растущий, молодой) lovely city, its atmosphere is an intriguing combination of Chinese and Old Colonial.

Trishaw are still favorite means of transport here, and the shopping streets, with their colourful bazaars and multitude of wares, never fail to fascinate. The waterfront has been the hub life ever since Capitan Francis Light of the East India Company acquired Penang from the local sultan to be Britain’s first trading station on the Malay Peninsula. He encouraged the then tiny local population of fishermen and pirates to clear the ground for settlement by firing silver coins from his ship’s cannons into jungle. The outlines of the original wooden stockage he built back in 1786 are marred now by the stonewalls of Ford Cornwallis, a national monument. A park lies within the walls, with several cannons on display, including the one called Seri Rambai, in whose barrel childless women place flowers in expectation of miraculous fertility.

The food on the island is mouth watering, with strong Chinese and Indian influences apparent. You my have a memorable lunch at the Prosperous Restaurant in Georgetown – spare ribs, crabs, prawns, and chicken dishes all saved with delicious spicy sauces. And the tropical fruit is superbred, spiny-skinned rambutan (with a centre like a lychee), purple mangosteen (whose sweet-sour flavour, a cross between a strawberry and a grape, was Queen’s Victoria’s special passion), papaya, custard apple, starfruit and the evil smelling durian that the hotels forbid you to bring inside.

Along the north coast of the island runs the fabulous stretch of the sandy beach known as Batu Ferringhi, Foreigner’s Rock, where most the resort hotels lie. Golden Sands, with its incredible landscaped pool befid the sea, and the Rasa Sayang, with authentic Malaysian ambience (= атмосфера) and air of sheer luxury, are two of the best-loved, standing right beside the white sands and backed by dense jungle. A stay at the Rasa Sayang is the idea of holiday heaven.
