Text4. Mobile Phones are Part of Our Daily Life

Mobile phones are part of our daily lives. We all use them - housewives, executives, teenagers and old age pensioners. According to the ITU - the International Telecommunication Union - at the end of 2002 there were 1.390 million users.

Of course, different people use their mobiles for different things, and there is a model for every taste. For example, women normally choose larger phones while men prefer smaller models. For young people, the priority is to send SMS text messages. They like mobile phones with covers they can change. As well as communication, they want entertainment. They want to play games and download ring-tones and icons.

On the other hand, executives and salespeople see their mobile as a work tool. They need to connect to their company computers. Typically they choose a medium-sized model with a large screen to read information. They demand features like a personal organizer, calculator, alarm clock, note pad, recorded reminders and connection to a PC.

There are other people who don't often use their phones to make calls, but want others to be able to contact them. Size is not important and they don't need to connect to the Internet. They want something cheap and simple to use and usually prefer pre-paid cards

Text: Making small talk

Small talk means pleasant conversation about things that are not very important. Your company sends you to an important international conference in the USA. While you are travelling from the hotel to the conference center you meet somebody who works for another division of your company for the first time. The conversation that you have will probably be what we call small talk. We often make small with people such as business acquaintances, neighbors, or others that we don’t know well. We even make small talk while waiting for a bus or standing in line just to pass the time or be friendly.

There are certain safe topics that people usually make small talk about. The weather is probably the number one thing. Sometimes even friends and family members discuss the weather when they meet or start a conversation. Sport news is a common topic, especially if a local team is doing extremely well or badly. If there is something that you and the other speaker have in common that may also be acceptable to talk about.

There are also some subjects that are not considered acceptable when making small talk. Personal information such as salaries or divorce are not talked about between people who do not know each other well. Negative comments about another person not involved in the conversation are also not acceptable when you do not know a person well you cannot be sure who their friends are. It is also not wise to continue talking about an issue that the other person does not comfortable with or interested in. Lastly, avoid one word answer, and ask questions to show that you want to keep the conversation going.

5. Which of these are good topics for small talk in your country? Which are not suitable?

the weather

TV programs

- your family

sports

your age

politics

news events

your school

your salary

your work

your clothes

your health
