The most sporting town

The town with a poetical name

There are some towns on the Kola Peninsula that one can take in at one glance. Such small town with the poetical name of Polyarny Zori is located between two beautiful lakes: the Imandra and the Pinozero. The town is named in honor of white summer nights which are especially beautiful in these places.

The major point of interest and pride of the town is the industrial enterprise Kola Nuclear Power Plant. The Kola Nuclear Power Plant is the largest polar nuclear power station in the world.

Kirovsk is the most sporting town of the Murmansk region, the major mountain-skiing center in the northwest of Russia with population of 35 thousand.

The pearl of Kirovsk is the Botanical garden-institute, and here you may not only get acquainted with the local flora but also visit real tropical jungle.

The mountain-skiing complex is the main point of interest of Kirovsk. Tracks of various degree of complexity have the total length of about 30 kilometers. Welcome!

There are two Umbas actually.

New Umba has sprung up on a coast of two deep bays of the White Sea in the neighborhood with Old Umba in the second half of the XIX century, after two saw-mills (Russian and Swedish) were launched here. Old Umba is considerably older (founded in the middle of the XV century), smaller by size, and hidden in the mouth of the river of the same name.

The main properties of Umba are the coast-dwellers old time traditions, salmon, hospitality of the local inhabitants and beauty of the mighty river. We recommend you to take a walk from the village to the shoreline by one of numerous paths.

There is one museum in Umba – "Museum of History and Life of Tersky Coast-dwellers". Russian you are or a foreigner, it is necessary to visit it. It was founded rather recently. The museum is really interesting and at the same time useful for those who love different kinds of handwork. For lovers of ancient mysteries "The Labyrinth" is undoubtedly the best place.

Festivals in Umba are really hearty. The most famous of Umba festivals is the Folklore Festival (carried out once per three years). Folk choirs and amateur singers from all over of the Murmansk region and from other coasts of the White Sea gather here to take part in the Festival.

In 1550, to protect trade people and fishermen from attacks of the Danish robbers the stockaded town Kola was built.

We recommend you to visit Kola Svyato-Nikolsky cathedral. It is famous for the Cross which was installed by Kola voevode (governor of the province) Feodor Mihailov in 1650 on the coast of the Kola bay in memory of his healing by sacred Varlaam Keretsky.
