I’m really boring I’m afraid. I’ve never sent a valentine’s card. This doesn’t mean I’ve never received them, I do. I think I probably have about six or seven all told. and once I’ve got a beautiful bunch of flowers. I never found out who they were from.

I’ve sent valentine cards. One year, in fact, when I was at school, I sent five to the same girl but she moved away and...I didn’t see her again. How many I received? er.. one, I think. And it was last year, from my wife. So I took her up for a meal. That’s the only thing I’ve done on valentine’s day, apart from sending cards.

I sent quite a few when i was younger and...I got quite a few too I have to admit that I got married on valentine’s day. That was in 1997. My girlfriend, now my wife, and I didn’t choose Valentine’s day. We just wanted to get married on the second Saturday in February. And that was Valentine’s day. I’ll never forget it. We got lots of cards.

In china, towards the end of June, people celebrate a holiday known as the dragon boat festival. The festival is held to honour the memory of Qu Xuan, a politician and poet, who, in the year of 278 B.C., is said to have committed suicide by jumping into a river. It is said that local people threw rice dumplings into the water to save Xuan’s soul from the evil spirits in the river, nowadays, boat races are held every year to remind people of the search for the body of the dead poet. Spectators eat rice cakes and crews row large dragon-shaped boats. Some researches, however, say that dragon boats existed long before the death of Qu Xuan, and the modern festival is a combination of several old traditions.
