Mechanized Infantry Battalion in Attack

The msn of the bn in offensive action is to close with and destroy or capture the enemy. The bn accomplishes this msn by a combination of fire, maneuver and close cbt.

If the bn is to execute an offensive msn a task force (TF) is organized using the bn as a nucleus.

Four mech inf cos & AT co are organic elms of the Bn. A medium tk co, eng plat, how btry and other units are usually attached to the Bn in offensive action. All of these units are included in the Bn TF. Within the bn TF the Bn commdr organizes co TF to which the mech inf plats and the tk plats are allocated. A TF organized around a mech inf co HQ is usually Inf hv (it includes more rifle than tank platoons). If organized around a tk co HQ the TF is the tk hv (the number of tk plats exceeds the number of rifle plats).

The Bn may conduct or participate in either of the two basic forms of offensive maneuver: the envelopment or the penetration.

The Bn uses two basic formations, the column (colm) or line and some variations: the echelon (ech) right or left, the wedge and the inverted wedge.

The colm formation for the Bn has one co in the attacking echelon; the lineformation has two or more cos in the attacking ech and one in res.

Normally the Bn is assigned a final and a intermediate objective (obj), a zone of action (Z of A), and axis of advance (A of A), a line of departure (L of D), an assembly area (AA), check points and other control measures. The Bn comdr may assign intermediate objs to cos.

The Bn comdr designates a main and secondary (scd atk). The main atk is directed against the obj which best facilitates the accomplishment of the Bn msn. When a supporting attack is used it is planned to support the main atk.

In his opord the battalion commander designates the day and the hour for atk (D-day and H-hour).

The Mech Inf Bn has left-hand and right-hand neighbours during the atk.

The frontage of the Bn L of D is usually 3-5 kms. The depth of the Bn formation is 3-5 kms either. The distance between the L of D and the initial obj may be 3-4 kms, but the distance from the L of D up to the final obj may be 8-10 kms. The distance between the initial and final objs is 5-6 kms. On both flangs of the Bn formation radars may be located.

Along the L of D and in front of the initial and final objs different kinds of obstacles may be erected.
