My Working Day

My working day begins at 7 o’clock when my alarm clock wakes me up. I don’t do morning exercises. Instead I take my dog out for a walk, and it is a good exercise for me. When we return home, I take a shower. By that time my mother has cooked breakfast and I eat it. Then I dress for college.

It doesn’t take me long to get to college, since it is around the corner. Classes begin at 8.30 and are over at 2 or 3. I sometimes stay at college after classes. Twice a week I train in the gym. On other days I go straight home. Sometimes I go shopping after college if my mother asks to buy some food.

When I come home, I have dinner and listen to some music. Then I call some of my classmates, and by 6 o’clock I am ready to do my next day’s homework. It may take me from two to four hours to prepare for the next day’s classes. I have to read a lot of additional materials besides school textbooks.

Then my parents come home from work and at about 8 o’clock we have supper, discuss some family problems and I go to my room and read a book. If there is an interesting program or a film on TV, I watch it till late at night. If there’s nothing special to see, I can go to bed at 11 o’clock.

All my weekdays are nearly the same, there’s no time left for entertainment or meeting with my friends.

My best friend’s name is Nick. We made friends a few years ago. We are of the same age. We live in the same block of flats, so we see each other almost every day.

Nick is a tall slender boy. He has got dark hair, large dark eyes, a straight nose and thin lips. He is very honest and just, understanding and kind. I trust him a lot and I am sure that I can rely on him in any situation. He never lets people down. Nick is only 19 but he is very responsible – he finishes whatever he starts. He’s got only one shortcoming – he is a bit stubborn. Nevertheless he is pleasant to deal with.

We spend a lot of time together. We often watch video or listen to music. Sometimes we go to the cinema or to the theatre, or walk around the centre of our town, visiting small cafes, museums, art galleries, shops. We talk for hours about all sorts of things (politics, love, teachers, girls). We discuss films, television programmes, books.

I never quarrel with Nick. But if there is some misunderstanding between us we try to make peace as soon as possible. Our friendship helps me to feel strong and sure of myself.

According to Homer, Pelops, the god of fertility staged the most memorable games in antiquity, roughly in 1370 BC. Later on games were organized several times. They can be considered the prehistory of the Olympics.

The founder of modern Olympics of the 19^th century was a Frenchman. Pierre de Fredy, Baron de Coubertin. In keeping with romantic notion of the Olympic revival it was decided to hold the first Games in Athens, Greece in 1896. Only 12 countries were represented. Despite the many problems that arose in Athens the Olympic games had come to stay. Their motto was “Faster! Higher! Stronger!”.

From that time on the Olympic were held more or less regularly, depending on the political situation on the continent. In 1990 they were held in Paris, in 1904 – St. Louis, in 1906 – Athens again, in 1908 – London, in 1912 – Stockholm, in 1920 – Antwerp, in 1924 – Paris, in 1928 – Amsterdam, in 1932 – Los Angeles, in 1936 – Berlin, in 1948 – London, in 1952 – Helsinki, in 1956 – Melbourne, in 1960 – Rome, in 1964 – Tokyo, in 1968 – Mexico, in 1972 – Sapporo, in 1976 – Innsbruck, in 1980 – Moscow, in 1984 – in the USA, in 1988 – Seoul, in 1992 – Alberwill, in 1994 – in Lillehammer,

The 22^nd Olympic Games took place in the Soviet Union in 1980. Five cities: Moscow, Kiev, Minsk, Riga and Tallinn greeted the world`s champions. Our sportsmen won 80 gold, 64 silver and 49 bronze medals there. That was the best result among other national teams.

The Olympic Games are held every two years now. They contribute much to the struggle for peace, understanding and trust among peoples.
