The combination of anaphoric and epiphoric repetitions enhances the stylistic coloring of the text

A handsome man kisses misses, an ugly one misses kisses.

The main stylistic function of chiasmus is to create a peculiar rhythmical quality of the utterance.

Functions and stylistic effects:

- to emphasise the second part of the utterance

- to break the rhythm and monotony of parallelism

- to create a peculiar/specific rhythmical quality of the utterance

Anaphora is the repetition of the first word of several succeeding sentences (usually parallel constructions).

E.g. He knew that his decision was already taken. He knew that it was surrender. He knew that he would slip from her. (C. Snow)

The main stylistic function of anaphora is not so much to emphasize the repeated unit as to create the background for the non-repeated unit, which, through its novelty, becomes foregrounded. The background-forming function of anaphora is also evident from the kind of words, which are repeated anaphorically.

E.g. “I’ve worried about you so much, Harod”, his mother went on. “I know the temptations you must have been exposed to. I know how weak men are. I know what your own dear grandfather told us about it.” (E.Hemingway)

Anaphoric recurrence of words or phrases helps the reader to fix the recurring segment in his/her memory. It also imparts a certain rhythmical regularity to the prosodic system of the text.

Functions and stylistic effects:

- contributes greatly to creating a certain rhythm of narration

- to create the background for the non-repeated unit, which, through its novelty, becomes foregrounded

Epiphora is the repetition of the final words in succeeding sentences or clauses. This SD is the opposite of anaphora.

E.g. Major Thrope was mortally wounded and his runner killed; Kume and runner were killed, Franklin was wounded; Romberton was killed; Sergeant Perkins was killed; the stretcher-bearers were killed. (R. Aldington)

The main function of epiphora is to add stress to the final words of the sentence. It, to a still greater extent than anaphora, regularizes the rhythm of the text and makes prose resemble poetry.

E.g. Through his brain slowly shifted the things they had done together. Walking together. Dancing together. Sitting silent together. Watching people together. (J.Abrahams)

E.g. If he wishes to float into fairyland, he reads a book; if he wishes to dash into the thick of battle, he reads a book, if he wishes to soar into heaven, he reads a book. (Chesterton)

Note the nearly complete parallelism of these three sentences.

Functions and stylistic effects:

- to add stress to the final words of the sentence

- to create a certain rhythm of narration
