These days millions of people all over the world travel either for business or for pleasure. They travel to see other countries & continents, modern cities & ruins of ancient towns. They travel to enjoy picturesque places, customs & traditions of other peoples or just for a change of scene.

Modern means of transport give us an excellent opportunity for comfortable travelling. You can choose any way of travelling depending on your taste & money. You can travel by train, by bus, by air, or by car. Each way of travelling has its advantages & disadvantages.

As for me there is nothing like travelling by plane. It is the fastest & the most convenient kind of transport. Planes cover long distances for a short period of time. The only disadvantage is the price of the tickets. Besides, some people feel air sick.

Travelling by train gives its own advantages. The price of the ticket is much lower. From the seat of a railway carriage you have a splendid view of the countryside. But trains in our country are not comfortable enough & often carriages are not clean.

Many people like to travel by car. You can choose any route you like by car. You can stop wherever & whenever you want. You don’t have to worry about the tickets or to carry your luggage. To cut a long story short, every person chooses according to his plans & preferences.

If we travel to Great Britain from Ukraine, we can do it by train & air.

The official name for the country whose language we study is the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland. In everyday use, however, the word “Britain” is quite possible. The United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland has several names. Some people say “Great Britain”, or “Britain”, or “the United Kingdom”, or just “the U.K.” & “GB”.

The United Kingdom is situated on the British Isles. The British Isles consist of two large islands, Great Britain & Ireland, & a great number of small islands. The British Isles are separated from the European continent by the North Sea & the English Channel. The western coast of Great Britain is washed by the Atlantic Ocean & the Irish Sea.

The island of Great Britain consists of three main parts: England, Wales & Scotland. Northern Ireland occupies one third of the island of Ireland.

There are no high mountains in GB. There are many rivers in the U.K. They are not long, but deep. The Thames is the deepest & the longest of the British rivers. The others are the Mersey, the Trent, the Tyne, the Clyde, etc.

Great Britain is not rich in mineral resources. The warm currents of the Atlantic Ocean influence the climate of the country. Winters are not very cold & summers are seldom hot.

The population of the United Kingdom is over 58 million people. The British mainly live in cities & towns. The country’s industry is highly developed & output of goods is larger than is needed for home use. The large industrial centres are Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester, Nottingham, Liverpool, Leeds & Bristol. Britain has only one per cent of the world’s population, but is the fifth largest trading nation.

Great Britain is a monarchy. But the power of the Queen is limited by Parliament which consists of the House of Lords & the House of Commons. Since 1973 Britain is a member of the European Community.

People often say that the Englishman’s home is his castle. They mean that the home is very important & personal. Most people in Britain live in houses rather that flats. Most of houses have a garden. Sports & games are very popular in GB. Football, tennis & cricket matches as well as boat & horse races always attract many people. The British like to walk. They like to spend their holidays on the coast.

The capital of the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland is London.
