Assignment 23. What would you advise to these people? Say what they may try doing or try to do. If necessary, use the clues given:

1) a language learner who has difficulty remembering words

(to pronounce words out loud, to think of appropriate contexts, to make up phrases, to use cards, to combine words in topical groups)

2) someone who has problems sleeping

(to maintain a healthy diet and a regular sleeping routine, to have a shower before bed, to read in bed, not to get worked up about not sleeping)

3) a teenager who has trouble coming to terms with his parents and thinks that

a) parents are always comparing him

(to explain calmly how you feel about it, to have a serious conversation with your parents)

b) his parents are overprotective

(to show them that you can make mature decisions, to take up an activity that shows you are responsible)

Note that the infinitive tends to express a single action following that of the predicate verb, while the gerund is preferred when simultaneous or preceding actions are expressed.
