Exercise 73. Use the Present Simple, the Future Simple or the Present Perfect instead of the infinitives in brackets:

 

He came forward to meet me, smiling.

I: A nice day?

Exercise 74. Use the Present Simple, the Present Continuous or the Present Perfect instead of the infinitives in brackets:

Exercise 75. Replace the time indicators by those given in brackets, change the form of the verb accordingly and make other necessary changes.

 

1. It rained yesterday (now, all day long yesterday, at this time yesterday, tomorrow, says the weather forecast, when we left home, all the time while we were working in the garden). 2. John regularly writes letters to his parents (seldom, the day before yesterday, tonight, when we called on him last night, at present, never). 3. Philip stayed with his friends during his vacations (when he was in Moscow, whenever he comes to Moscow, for the time being, still, no longer — he lives in the students’ hostel). 4. Mrs. Stuart is going shopping today (on Saturdays, after her children returned from school, while her children had classes, as soon as she finished doing the room). 5. Exercise 76. Open the brackets using the Present Simple, the Present Continuous, the Past Simple or the Present Perfect Tense.

 

1. In the morning Rosemary (see) Tony lying in the sitting room: — What you (do) here? — I (sleep) here. — I am sorry we (take) your room. 2. He’s a night watchman. He works at night and (sleep) in the daytime. It’s noon now, and he still (sleep). 3. I first (meet) Ned a month ago, and I (meet) him several times since then. 4. I usually (go) to bed before midnight. 5. I (sit) here all night and I swear I (not/doze) for a moment. 6. What’s your brother doing? – He (play) tennis with his friend, they (play) it every day. 7. He wants to buy a car, but first he must learn how to drive, so he (take) driving lessons. 8. I (write) to them a month ago, but I’ve not had a reply, so I just (write) again. 9. — Where is she? — She (talk) to a policeman. — What (happen)? — She’s been driving without a license. 10. It’s 3 p.m. and he (not/eat) anything today, but he (eat) a good dinner last night. 11. Is Margaret ready to come out? – No, she still (dress). 12. I (read) this book several times. I first (read) it in 2001. 13. He often (read) detective stories; he (read) a very good one now. 14. She (not/have) a holiday since 2005, but she (have) a very long holiday in 2004.

Exercise 77. Translate into English:

 

1. Надень пальто и шапку. На улице очень холодно, дует сильный ветер. 2. Видишь человека на углу? Он на нас смотрит. 3. Сегодня на обед придет Елена. — Я давно ее не видела. 4. Когда учитель объясняет новое правило, он обычно пишет на доске примеры. 5. Ты что-нибудь слышишь? — Я слушаю внимательно, но ничего не слышу. 6. Они уже уехали? Нет, они уезжают трехчасовым поездом. 7. Кто только что вышел из комнаты? — Не знаю, я никого не заметил. 8. По дороге на работу я обычно встречаю детей, которые идут в школу. 9. Сегодня мы играем в теннис, Микки и я. 10. Ты видела Мэри сегодня? — Нет, она больна. Она больна уже десять дней. 11. Что ты собираешься делать после занятий? — Хочу пойти в кино. 12.
