Site Design

Synthesis, based on a land use plan, evolves from the analytical phase. [The land use plan is developed from abstract relational dia­grams that are rearranged by warping, shifting, stretching, or rotating them to adapt to physical conditions; they are not arbitrary.]0 As many alternatives as possible should be tested in order to choose the best dia­gram. [The design synthesis will be an interpretation and articulation of factors into a design that fits the site without seriously altering functional relationships.]⁰ And all design details must be grouped, sorted, and modified as site conditions and applications indicate.

Prior to commencing any construction the closest investigation of the site should be conducted for the contractor to be prepared for what lies ahead. [Site investigation should be made concurrent with the formulation of program objectives — it ensures the flexibility of the site's potential and the integration of its natural and cultural features with the design.]⁰ To develop the best possible site for accommodat­ing objectives the program must be carefully prepared. Because the program develops from specific needs, these needs determine the over­all objectives. The task appears to be quite tangled and challenging.

Sustainable site design must include broad considerations of the environmental role of the site as well as the program or intention of the project. Sustainable design must recognize and retain functional elements of a site and consider the relationships between the site and the community at large.

To paraphrase the 1st century architect, Vitruvius, the designer's challenge is to create a site design which is useful, stable, durable, and beautiful in equal measure. In other words, [a design should be functional, carefully constructed of durable materials, and possess intrinsic beauty due to the care and craftsmanship evident in its form and aesthetic expression.]⁰ (1 600 п.зн.)
