A rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) freshwater tank site in Europe is starting to experience low level mortalities mid-summer.

Low level mortalities

Moribunds and mortalities appear dark, lethargic, some have pop-eye and others have a swollen abdomen.

Pale gills

There are no external lesions, however, internally some fish have slightly swollen kidneys with grey to pale pink nodules present.

Histology: multifocal granulomatous inflammation of the kidney and spleen with numerous PKX cells or proliferative kidney disease-type parasites present

Proliferative kidney disease (PKD).

a) No treatment available, however, by improving the rearing environment for the fish (lower stocking density, increased aeration or oxygenation, lower water temperatures) the impact of the disease can be reduced.

b) Salt (sodium chloride) baths may assist in reducing the level of challenge and reducing the osmotic pressure on the fish.

c) For the future stocking this site later in the summer may reduce the chances of infection in future generations.
