1. Juanita Nunez knows Edwina D'Orsey is going to dismiss her today. She is in Edwina's office now. Edwina D'Orsey is uneasy about her decision. A wall clock shows 2.10 p.m.

"How did you know the exact amount of money missing from your cash drawer at 1.50 after almost five hours of busy transactions at the counter?" Edwina wants to know.

"I always know the amount of cash I have" is Juanita's answer.

"How long have you had the ability?"

"I have had this ability to calculate and carry figures in my head since I was a schoolgirl."

"I believe you have been on cash since we opened this morning. Do you know "how much is in your cash drawer now?"

Juanita hesitates, then nods and writes down the amount on a slip of paper. It is $23,765.

Edwina passes the slip to the operations officer, she has just invited to her office.

"Please, go with Mrs Nunez and stay with her while she balances out today's cash. Check the result. Compare it with this figure."

In three-quarters of an hour he reappears. He looks nervous. His hands are shaking. He puts the slip or paper on the desk.

"Is the figure right? Edwina asks him.

"Exactly right."

2. Juanita Nunez has been with FMA's main downtown branch for 18 months. She has been a teller since last year. She has kept the running tally in her head for a long time, but she finds it impossible to explain it to others how or why. It is simply there. It happens without an effort. Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing are as easy as breathing to her. She does it automatically at the bank counter as she takes money in from customers or pays it out. And she has learned to glance at her cash drawer to check that the cash she has on hand is what it should be, that various denominations of notes are in their right order, and in sufficient numbers. Even with coins, she can estimate the amount closely at any time. Occasionally, at the end of a busy day when she balances her cash, her mental figure is in error by a few dollars, but never more.

He is looking at the advertising proofs on his desk. One announcement urges:

Another claims:

BILLS ARE PAINLESS

WHEN YOU SAY

"PUT IT ON MY KEYCHARGE!"

A third advises:

YOU CAN AFFORD TOMORROW'S DREAM TODAY!

NOW!

A half dozen others are on similar themes. The bank has already approved the advertizing.

The Austin Advertizing Agency sent the proofs to Alex a few days ago for general information.

4. Margot Bracken and Alex Vandervoort have been in argument about Keycharge credit card proofs for a long time.

"All right, look at that" Margot is pointing to the announcement which begins: WHY WAIT? YOU CAN AFFORD TOMORROW'S DREAM TODAY!

"You are trying to influence people who believe that what they see in print is true. A lot of people nowadays have credit cards because you all pushed them so hard. The only thing you haven't done is hand cards out at street corners. And what about the eighteen per cent interest all credit cards charge?"

"If people pay their credit card bills when they get them, there is no interest charge." Alex answers.

"You mean pay their bills in full. But how many do? Don't most credit card users pay that convenient "minimum balance" that the statements show? And carry the rest forward as debt — which is what you bankers really want them to do. Credit cards have replaced small loans."

"Yes, it's true" Alex agrees. "But banks have to make a profit somewhere."

"That's enough," Margot says" I have a feeling that for the past fifteen minutes I've been present at a shareholders meeting."
