Students discuss different ways of travelling to London. They imagine themselves in the roles of the clerk at the Travel Agency and the client. They inquire about the time of departure and arrival, the price for tickets; speak about advantages of travelling by first, business and economy class. Discuss all possible ways to get to London while changing planes (no visual aids are available).

Situation 1: You’ve come to a hotel to book a room for a few days. The hotel has got some vacancies, but still you find it difficult to choose a room. Some of them are too expensive, others are too noisy or not comfortable enough. Finally, you make your choice.

Situation 2: You are at the reception desk. A few days ago you sent a letter and asked to reserve a single room for you. But there’s an international trade fair in the city and the hotel is full up. The clerk offers you a bed in a double room. You don’t like it, but there is no way out.

Situation 3: Not long ago you reserved a double room at the Park Hotel. You asked for an inside room with a fridge and a shower, but you’ve got an outside room facing a noisy street. The room has got neither a refrigerator nor a shower. You settle it with the administrator.

Role –card 1: You are the secretary of the company “Ukrexport”. Phone the “Savoy” hotel in London and make a reservation for 3 people for five days, beginning from April 2nd.
Role-card 2: You are the clerk at the hotel. Answer the questions of the client. Accept the reservation, enquire about the number of people, the dates, the rooms.
Role-card 3: You are calling the manager of the plant in London and ask him to book hotel rooms for the Ukrainian delegation.
Role- card 4: You are Mr Green, the manager of the plant in London. Say that you will make a reservation. Discuss the details.

 

Example dialogue:

- Hello. This is the Sales Manager of “Ukrainian export” speaking. Can I talk to Mr Green?

- Speaking. Can I help you?

- As you know, our delegation is going to visit London. We’d like to ask you to book hotel rooms for us from April 23rd till April 27th. Will that be possible?

- Yes, of course. I’ll certainly do that. For how many people?

In the form of the discussion the students negotiate the terms of booking accommodation. The students perform the roles of the hotel receptionist and the clients. They enquire about the price of the rooms, the services the hotel offers (no visual aids are available).

Situation 2.

- Good morning! My name’s Blake. I’m from Blake and C°. I’ve got an appointment with Mr. Voronin at 10.15.

- Good morning, Mr Blake. Mr Voronin is expecting you. Will you take a seat, please?

- Thank you. I’m a bit early, actually.

- That’s all right, Mr Blake.

- Доброго ранку, містере Блейку. Містер Воронін чекає на Вас. Сідайте, будь ласка!

Situation 3.

- Oh, Mr Blake, glad to meet you. How are you?

- Це питання ціни. Я повинен сказати, що ми знаходимо її значно вищою, ніж на світовому ринку.

- If I understand you correctly, you’d like to receive a discount.

- Так. Беручи до уваги, що ми Ваші постійні партнери, це було б добре.

- What discount do you expect?

- 7%.

- I’m afraid, that’s a bit difficult. Our goods are sold well on the world market. But as it’s our trial order we can give you a 5% discount.

- Добре. Думаю, ми можемо погодитися на 5%.

 

- Good afternoon, Mr. Glad to hear you. Have you studied our contract form?

- Так, і дуже уважно. Боюся, що деякі Ваші умови не відповідають нашим вимогам.

- Do you consider we could meet and discuss all the details with you?

b) - Скільки верстатів (machine-tools) Ви б хотіли купити?

- Так, але ми можемо погодитися на часткову поставку. Перші 15 верстатів нам потрібні в квітні, а решта – через три місяці.

- Так, модель MR 803 компресорів відповідає нашим вимогам.

- Я абсолютно згоден з Вами. Це наша найкраща модель і вона дуже добре продається на ринку.

- Я переконаний, що Ви маєте рацію.
