The executive power is exercised by the British Government which is headed by the Prime Minister. The Government also includes senior ministers who run departments and make up the Cabinet, the body which is responsible for the national policy. Most ministers are members of the House of Commons, although the government is also fully represented by ministers in the House of Lords.

The Prime Minister is the majority party leader and is appointed by the Queen. All other ministers are also appointed by the Queen on the recommendation of the Prime Minister. Every Tuesday while Parliament is in session, the Cabinet meets in the Cabinet room at 10 Downing Street to discuss the issues of the day. Government Cabinets have met in the same room since 1856.

The Prime Minister presides over the Cabinet and at regular meetings with the Queen, informs her of the general business of the government. The Prime Minister's other responsibilities include recommending a number of appointments to the Queen. These include high-ranking members of the Church of England, senior judges and certain civil appointments. He also recommends appointments to several public boards and institutions, as well as to various royal and statutory commissions.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) is a constitutional monarchy. It means that the country is governed by the Parliament and the Queen is the Head of the State.

The legislative power in the UK is exercised by the Parliament which consists of the Monarch, the House of Lords, and the House of Commons. The main functions of Parliament are to examine, to debate and to approve laws, to finance through taxation the work of government, and to check the work of the government.

The House of Commons is an elected body and it has 646 members. The House of Lords is composed of hereditary and life peers and peeresses. There are 736 members of the House of Lords.

The executive power is exercised by the Prime Minister and his Cabinet. The Prime Minister is the majority party leader and is appointed by the Queen. All other ministers are also appointed by the Queen on the recommendation of the Prime Minister. The Cabinet is responsible for the national policy. The Prime Minister holds Cabinet meetings at his (her) house at number 10 Downing Street, which is not far from the Houses of Parliament.

The United Kingdom has no Ministry of Justice. Responsibility for the administration of the judicial system is divided between the Lord Chancellor and the Home Secretary. The Lord Chancellor is concerned with the composition of the courts, with civil law, parts of criminal procedure and law reform in general. The Home Secretary is concerned with the prevention of criminal offences, the apprehension, trial and treatment of offenders, and with the prison service.
