The Russian Federation is a democratic federative State with a republican form of government.

According to the Constitution the powers of government are divided into 3 branches: the legislative, the executive and the judicial.

The President of the Russian Federation is the Head of the State. He or she is directly elected by the people for a four-year term and cannot serve more than two consecutive terms.

The Prime Minister is appointed by the President of the Russian Federation with the consent of the State Duma.

The Government headed by the Prime Minister is the highest executive body of the Russian Federation.

The Federal Assembly, the legislative branch of the federal government, is composed of the Council of the Federation, and the State Duma.

The Council of the Federation consists of 166 members and the State Duma has 450 members. All members are elected for a four-year term.

The highest judicial body of the Russian Federation is the Constitutional Court. It consists of 19 judges who are appointed by the President and approved by the Council of the Federation. The Constitutional Court’s responsibility is to rule on the constitutionality of legislative and executive actions.

The Supreme Court is the highest judicial body of the Russian Federation for civil, criminal, administrative and other cases. The Supreme Arbitration Court is the highest judicial body of the Russian Federation which handles economic suits. Judges for these high courts are appointed by the President and approved by the Council of the Federation. By law, all judges in Russia are independent and cannot be removed from office.
