Firefighters are called on many different kinds of emergencies. In most of these, time will be important. Saving a life or controlling the fire will depend upon time. Firefighters will have no control over delayed alarms, but will have control over responding quickly and safely. They must be prepared for the job. Since time is of the essence, fire departments have certain basic procedures planned before an emergency situation – rescue and first aid methods, forcible entry methods, hose layouts, ladder procedures and so on – that require group or team action. The precision of these operations requires teamwork, the smooth working together of individuals to accomplish a task that is important to the total operation. To work together under conditions where the safety of one member is dependent upon the action of another requires teamwork. How the emergency is resolved will depend upon teamwork.

Every good team has confidence, belief in the individual, and in the team. Studying and drilling as a team will develop and nurture this confidence. The strength of the team is the combined strength of each firefighter who composes the team. It is possible to evaluate the strength of a team by evaluating the firefighters. Team spirit is the enthusiasm developed through satisfactory teamwork.

The contribution of each member of the team is essential to its proper functioning. This includes all facets of ability, confidence, and spirit. Teamwork is based on the following factors:

- All members must have a common desire for success.

- Each member must contribute to the team.

- Members should know their job function and the job functions of other team members so they may supplement each other as team-mates.

- Members must have two-way communication.

- All members must drill over to assure precision and quickness.

4. What is “teamwork”? How can you define it?

5. Why does teamwork play a great role in firefighting and rescue operations?

Exercise 4. Translate into English:

1. Пожарные выезжают на многие ЧС – пожары, обрушение зданий, взрывы, утечка вредных веществ и т.д.

2. Время играет очень важную роль при реагировании на ЧС.

3. Пожарные должны быть всегда готовы к работе – в любое время дня или ночи.

4. Любая ЧС требует совместных усилий всех членов команды.

5. Коллективная работа очень важна, поскольку жизнь каждого члена боевого расчёта зависит от действий других.
