ED WITH PAST TENSE VERBS

Pronunciation

 

There are three types of pronunciation of - ed in regular Past Tense verbs.

Ex. 15. Organize these verbs into 3 groups according to their pronunciation. Listen and check.

 

created visited lasted needed aimed
organized traveled enjoyed started resembled
continued checked attracted arrived expected

Ex. 16. Find out the irregular Past Tense verbs according to their transcription. Write down the verbs, and their translation.

Ex. 17. Check if you remember Past Tenses: analyze the underlined verbs in the sentences.

 

1. By the late 50s the package holiday had changed entirely the average British attitude to holidays.

2. Before the Second World War almost a quarter of British population never went on holiday at all.

3. The traffic was so bad that day that it took us nearly two hours to get to the place.

4. With a sigh of relief we went to get something to eat, played a few games and went home.

5. We use Past Simple for historic events such as the reign of Edward I in England.

6. Last year a variety of international guests performers appeared at the Edinburgh military Tattoo show and thrilled the people with motorcycle stunts (= каскадерские трюки), Chinese dance and much more.

7. Shrovetide (= масленица) is an ancient Russian holiday which dates back to the 9th century.

8. I was working all day yesterday so I didn't have time to meet you.

9. When I arrived the group had been going round the town for 2 hours.

10. Geoffrey attributed one of Britain's early names Albion, to the fact that the country had first ruled by Albina, daughter of Roman Emperor, Diocletian.

 

 

 

1. Past Simple is used to express a finished action in the past (often with the exact time of event) i.e. in the past at a specific time which is now finished.

e.g. We played tennis yesterday.

They met in 1980 but they didn’t marry until 1993.

I saw Peter last Sunday and we remembered our school friends.

2. It is also used to express a past habit.

e.g. When I was a child we went to Spain every summer.

I wore a uniform at school

3. We use Past Simple to tell a story especially in chronological order (narration). So Past Simple is often called a narrative tense.

e.g. There was once a man who lived in a small house in the country.

One day he left the house and went into town. On the way he me t ….
