1. It is important to distinguish between 2 kinds of adjectives – limit and graduable.

Limit adjectives have very strong meaning

e.g. exhausted means “very tired”

delicious means “very tasty”.

So it sounds unusual to say “very exhausted ”or” very delicious”.

Graduable adjectives express qualities existing in different strength

· person can be more or less tall, more or less attractive

· thing can be more or less big, or more or less dirty.

2. So we can use modifiers like fairly, quite, very, extremely with graduable adjectives like attractive, big, dirty, tired.

3. To modify limit adjectives we need extreme modifiers like absolutely, completely, quite, utterly

e.g. absolutely huge

completely terrified

quite perfect

utterly ridiculous.

4. Some modifiers go together, but some do not. It’s better to learn them. The best advice is, if you are in doubt, to use absolutely, which can go with all limit adjectives.

5. Quite, rather, pretty

Quite + limit adjective = “absolutely”

e.g. quite right

quite sure

Quite + gradable adjective = positive idea, neutral, negative

Positive: quite ' good

Neutral: ' quite ' good (equal stress)
