41 SS study the example of the article and make necessary notes. Then they write their own article (180 – 200 words) about the customs and traditions in the USA for an international student magazine. The aim of the article is to give some useful information to visitors so that they can understand better American culture and peculiarities of American people’s behaviour.

UNIT 2

GOOD LUCK, BAD LUCK

1 SS open their books and discuss, in pairs, what is happening in the pictures. They try to guess nationalities of the people in the pictures.

We can see a beautiful lady with the broken mirror. As far as I can know a broken mirror always brings bad luck but I don’t believe in it.

2 In groups, SS discuss with their partner their lucky number, colour, day, pen, item of clothes, name, animalthey heard about.

Believe it or not but number 13 often brings me good luck when buy a ticket in the lottery, pass my exams etc.

3 SS work in pairs and do the questionnaire, then check their scores and discuss them.

Most yes) means you are a very superstitious person and that is why you’re not self-confident.

Most no) means you take into consideration some superstitions from time to time but you’re clever enough to believe in your abilities, power etc.

4 SS read an article about different superstitions all over the world and choosetheir answers from the names of the occasions on the right.

TIP STRIP for SS:

· Read the text quickly for general understanding.

· You only need to understand the main point of each paragraph. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every word.

· Read each paragraph; decide what the main point is, then find the best answer.

· Be careful – the answers won’t use the same words as the text.

When you have read all the paragraphs, go back and check your answers. Give SS five minutes to go through the text and match the questions and answers of the article. Tell them to quests any new words from the context. Check answers. Feedback round the class.

- Do you believe in superstitions?

- Yes, I do in most cases.

- What for, in your opinion do they exist?

- They exist because people are afraid of their future.

- Do you have some friends or relatives who strongly believe in superstitions? (give some examples of their superstitions)?

- Yes, my best friend believes that if a black cat will cross his way that will bring him bad luck.

7 SS fill in the gaps in the columns of the table about different superstitions all over the world they’ve read in the article.
