17 SS guess the meaning of some proverbs and fill in the gaps in the sentences.

TIP STRIP for SS:

· Read the text for general understanding.

· Not more than five lines are correct.

· Look at the whole sentence, not just at the numbered lines.

· Underline words you think are wrong and read the sentence (not the line) without it. Does it sound right?

· Look out for extra pronouns. There are two examples in this text. Can you find them?

· Incorrect words can only occur once in a line.

21 SS read the text below and use the word given in capitals at the end of each line to form a word that fits in the space in the same line.

TIP STRIP for SS:

· Read the text for general understanding.

· Decide what type of word you need for each gap (e.g. noun, adjective, etc.)

· Look at the whole sentence, not just at the line containing the gap.

· You should make no more that two changes to the word.

· You may need to add prefix or suffix to some words.

· Some words may be positive or negative. Check the meaning of the passage!

· Read through the text and check that your words make sense.

· Check your spelling.

22 SS divide the superstitions into two groups, which bring good or bad luck.

26 Ask SS to complete the second sentence so that it has a similar meaning to the fist sentence, using the word given. Explain that they shouldn’t change the word given. SS must use between two and three words to fill in the gap, including the word given. SS do the exercise and compare answers in pairs before you check it.
