E) classification based on the meaning of the prepositional or adverbial particle

Some particles appear in a large number of different phrasal verbs. Eighteen of them

forms of English. In modern English, it occurs only in the phrasal verb take aback.

The meanings of English phrasal verbs are not always obvious. Yet, their classification according to the particles shows that they are not just arbitrary combinations of verbs and particles. Instead, they fit into the broad patterns. We shall analyze the meanings of the phrasal verbs basing on the meaning of the preposition or adverbial particle the verbs are used with. These are 9 particles chosen from the list of prepositions given above (48) which are most frequently used with the verbs to form phrasal verbs. Now they are given in an alphabetic order: away, back, down, in, off, on, out, over, up. This classificationseems to be the most practical and helpful for the students, because it is based on the most important meanings of the particle being studied.
