Theme # 1: “Word stock and society” (15 hours)

 

Subtheme # 1: “Neologisms”

 

Tasks:

1. Make a research work on the structure and usage of neologisms. Then present your findings in class. In your research include the following things:

 

- usage frequency

- users background

- what neologisms (their sphere)

- if they are the same in your mother tongue

- if they are effective to use

- if they are productive

2. According to R. Berchfield who worked at compiling a four-volume supplement to NED says that averagely 800 neologisms appear every year in Modern English. And your task is to comment on the given statement and define the linguistic and extra-linguistic causes of it.

Make a scheme or table which shows:

 

- the reasons or causes of appearing more and more neologisms in English language;

- the development ways of neologisms;

- the attitudes of linguists towards new-coinages both literary and colloquial;

- the peculiarities and role in linguistics.

Subtheme # 2: “Archaisms”

 

Tasks:

1. Find out the reasons why the words become archaic and present your findings. Make the list of archaic words connected with different themes. You may choose any theme you are interested in. present your task in the form of report with analysis.

2. Differentiate two notions as lexical archaisms and semantic archaisms, explain their differences. Make an outline of a special lecture or seminar devoted to the given theme. In your outline you may include the following factors:

 

- aims and principles of the lecture or seminar

- problematic tasks or questions related to the theme

- introduction, body and conclusion of your presentation

- list of used literature

- typical tasks to fulfill.

3. Divide into small groups of 3 or 4 students. You are going to participate to the students’ scientific conference related to the theme “The usage problems of neologisms, archaisms and terms”. Subtheme # 3: “Terms”

 

Tasks:

 

1. There are given three controversial problems in the field of terminology. Give your specific characteristics on each problem and say which of them do you mostly close to and why. Evaluate each problem of terms to the following scale: vital, important to some degree, less important. Present your opinions giving your own linguistic judgment.

 

1) a term loses its terminological status when it comes into common usage. Under the circumstances numerous terms pass into general usage.

2) there are linguists in whose opinion terms are only those words which have retained their exclusiveness and are not known or recognized outside their specific sphere.

3) according to some linguists an ideal term should be monosemantic. Polysemantic terms may lead to misunderstanding and that is a serious in professional communication.

2. Find out information on the researches in the field of terminology. Make a table that shows the names of English, Kazakh and Russian linguists or scholars who really concerned with the problems of terminology. In your table include the following criteria:

- their suggestions or contributions to the field of terminology

Subtheme # 1: “English soma phraseological units in comparison with related and non-related languages”

Tasks:

1. Study the theme phraseology and find out certain facts on soma phraseological units. Analyze the information you have gained from different sources and say what conclusions you can reach.

 

Prepare a presentation of the results of you research. Use your notes and include any conclusions you have reached so far about the given theme.

2. Collect examples on soma phaseological units from different sources. Compile a short English-Kazakh-Russian dictionary of soma phraseological units. Your dictionary should consist of 150-200 entries in English and their equivalents in the given languages.

Tasks:

1. Compare and contrast the structural and semantic ways of proverbs, sayings and their functions in speech in Kazakh and Russian languages. Then make up a table that shows their correspondences and similarities. Work out an outline how to present them in class.

2. Work in small groups of 3 or 5 students.

a) Think of points to differentiate proverbs, phaseological units and sayings from each other. Listen to each others exchanging ideas. Make notes on the best suitable and important suggestions they make.

b) Consider your ideas and those of the group. Choose the best five ideas to include to the presentation.

c) Make your group’s presentation to show their differences.

3. Choose any one literary work of famous English or American writers. You may take even the part or extract from these works, then choose examples of phraseological units, proverbs and sayings. - lexicographic researches of English and Kazahstani linguists

2. You are going to have a teaching practice on the next semester. Work out a mini-dictionary devoted to young learners. Pay attention to the type, volume, illustrative materials while compiling. Then present your dictionary.

Tasks:

2) Factors that depend on arranging the number of meanings a word is given and their choice

3) Ways the meanings of words may be defined

4) Arrangement of supplementary material for learners and teachers

2. Identify the peculiarities of inside forms of special dictionaries in any language. Suggest some ideas to be improved in special type of dictionaries.

b) Make a presentation of a dictionary you have chosen or compile your own short dictionary and present it to class.
